How are they getting past the CAPTHAs? Or does this forum even use CAPTHAs?

I don't know if we use CAPTCHAs, but even if we did, there are ways of getting around them. In addition to CAPTCHA-solving software, there are whole businesses mostly in Asia dedicated to solving these things, usually at prices between $1 and $6 per 1000 (and sometimes as high as $20). Random people give solutions to them and receive some small compensation per solution or set of solutions, and the purchaser can report if the solutions turned out to be incorrect. These labor-powered businesses are actually way more economical than the software because it's difficult to make the software solve CAPTCHAs and easy to change CAPTCHAs such that the software can no longer solve them. What's interesting is that the different businesses actually differ in quality; if you foresee getting CAPTCHAs that require identifying Klingon numbers, for example, you might be able to manage a 1% success rate from the $20/1000 places, while the cheaper ones are unlikely to solve any. :)

Interesting...but for the purposes of it being spam prevention, would it not still be effective? Doesn't the cost per ad go up after you must also hire CAPTCHA evaders?
Life is short. Have fun.

We use CAPTCHAs, and we also use some "simple" questions that people have to answer (interestingly, I had so many people unable to solve "1 + 1 - 1" that I had to take that one off.  Many of them seemed to get "2" or something else as an answer, frighteningly).

The volume of spambots we get has been drastically reduced by the questions, but we always had CAPTCHAs since the forums first existed, so I don't know what the volume of spambots would have been like without those.  There was a definite tipping point past which the CAPTCHAs were clearly no longer that effective against at least some spambots, though, and that's when I added those other questions.

Nowadays we're really only seeing a very occasional spam from someone that I suspect is a low-paid actual person hired to come here and do the spam, rather than a bot proper.  There's no cure for them other than just deleting their messages and banning them, so far as I know.

I think XKCD has a good application for this situation: http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/constructive.png

Honestly I think you should put that back on ;D Seriously, if you can't do math at that simple of a level, AI War is not a game for you.

Yeah, I was really puzzled by that one, too.  I had at least three cases of people unable to get in, though.  I thought... well, whatever.  :P

Not sure where it was used, but at some place they have the question "are you a bot" where the default answer is "yes", people cant find a way past that question ...  ::)

In the end bots often originate from the same source, banning some ranges of IPs makes them a lot less of a problem even without captcha's. In the end the "click this link to register" emails, where an admin has to click that link works best, but puts a bit of extra workload on the admins (I've used this method when I set up a work-related forum, and in the end only google's crawl-bots IPs had to be banned).

I am wondering at what difficulty they play AIW ....  ::)

Well, if one AI is at difficulty 1, and the other is ad difficulty 1, that's like... difficulty 3 right?

I decided I wanted to know what foot pains are.  Turns out they're more or less just jewelry.  I am disappoint in the internet.  I mean, if you're going to spam something, you might as well make it interesting.  Here I was, hoping it would be some kind of dissolvable herbal supplement that would make time travel possible.  *sigh*

Aww. I was expecting something made from rhino horns or whatever, too. Probably for the best. For the rhinos.
