Nothing to go for

Hey,
I've recently come back to AI War and installed the beta updates. Upon starting a new game and scouting around 15 planets, I've noticed no advanced factories or research stations. Is this normal for this version?

What size map are we talking about? I've had that happen simply as a product of bad luck, occasionally, on 80 planet maps.

Hmm. That's improbable but not, I suppose, impossible. I'd keep playing and scouting, you've either got some very bad luck there, or an as-yet-unreported bug.

I've tried a new game and I've found advanced research stations. No factories yet, but I'll probably find some.

I've restarted some games on 80 planet maps cause of a similair thing, I'd even dare to say that on an 80 planet map it is more commen to not find any advanced R-stations of Factories in your area. I am however rather new to the game so dont know how it might have been in earlier builds.

I do actually like it, gives proper "early" scouting a good reason and makes it so you cant, by default, just take an area around you and at the same time increase every aspect of your position. Some things are more fun if it takes a longer road to get there :)
(My current campaign, X with 80 planets, has no bonus-stations in my corner of the X, meaning 20planets without any of them.)

I've actually had this problem A LOT on the Circular Map style. Every time I play one I always seem to get surrounded by Mk IV planets and no factories or any capturables in between. I dunno if it's that particular map style or what but I usually tend to avoid it when I make a new game.

That's the problem with maps that have very few connections (snake maze etc). Sure you can defend like a god but if you get unlucky then you dont have enough resources to attack. I usually play on high connection maps like lattice now
More music. More monsters. More to explore. More AI War.

I usually only play Realistic or X anyway. I like having lots of connections for that reason.

Started a new campaign, just to get myself killed and view the entire map ...

On a 80 planet X-map I got 2 lvl4 Fabs, close to 10 lvl5 Fabs, 2 or so data centers and a whole bunch of planetairy improvements.
Funny thing was that the 2 lvl4 Fabs where at the other end of the uni 2 jumps apart from each other.

Bear in mind the maps are heavily randomized, so it's not at all unlikely to find a galaxy where you search through 15 planets and find nothing interesting.  Solution?  Keep scouting more planets. ;)

Those level 4 factories always seem to be right next (one or two jumps or so) to each other, even on large maps. And (of course) on the opposite side of the map from where I start.
Not much to do about it really, but it's pretty nice to capture that factory when you already have 5+ ships researched and ready to start churning out those mark IV ships.  ;D
