Those nukes would have to fizzle when shot down though (and of course give no AIP) or they would completely break the game.

Brutal:

-Tesseract Force field guard posts (cyan, magenta, yellow, black)

The AI has become hyperaware (;-P) to the humans assault strategies and has now set up a combination lock on its force fields. Dubbed "the Tesseract," it can only be solved by intrepid players.

This is a series of four guard posts that must be destroyed in the correct order. In following the theme of a Tesseract, each vertex has four vectors, and scattered throughout the galaxy there will be journal log entries on which guard post needs to be destroyed first for the force field to come down.
There are 4! possible permutations, which makes finding the journal logs helpful but not impossible to do without. Finding even one or two journal logs simplifies it a great deal.

Ways to determine the order:
25% chance at getting a journal log entry when doing any hacking activities. This creates more strategic decision-making on hacking.
100% chance at a journal entry from taking down a plot or boss, including hybrid super weapon, avenger, cookie monster, mothership, or AI.

Health: 1 million. Adjustable. I don't want this to be too hard to take down a post. The challenge needs to be in ordering.

Stasis guard post - normal AI guard post idea

Short range EMP guard post- AI normal guard post idea
Only ships within a short range (should include raid starship range) get EMP for 20 seconds.

Counters blob mechanics.

Core Singularity Guard Post: This is a core guard post with an ability similar to the Starship Disassembler Guardian, but rather than being limited to starships, this guard post can consume large numbers of fleet craft as well. It has powerful, medium-range guns as well.
I can already tell this is going to be a roller coaster ride of disappointment.

Just summing up the nominations thus far:

Brutal Core Guard Posts
Interplanetary Blackhole Machine Guardpost
AI Nuclear Missile Silo
Hunter/Seeker Factory
The Nanoswarm Fortress
Flux Projector
Tesseract Force Field Generators

Non-Brutal Core Guard Posts
Attritioner Guardpost
Sniper Guardpost
Tractor Beam Guardpost
Stasis guard post
Short range EMP guard post
Core Singularity Guard Post

Did I put any in the wrong category, or miss any with a mantis, etc?

Anyone else want to chime in?  I might just pick them directly with the fields this small, which is fine.  I'm guessing folks may be paying more attention to the Skyward Collapse alpha at this point ;)

That's where I've been :)  I've tried to keep up with what has been going on here, but most of my attention is going into helping Skyward be the best game it can be.

Why is "core singularity guardpost" listed as a non-core guardpost?

It isn't, it's listed under "Non-Brutal Core Guard Posts"

If there's going to be an IBM, we may as well rename the Zenith Bombard Guardpost to the Antimatter Mass Driver, and upgrade them to 6-shots each....

Also, an Implosion Drone Host could be an interesting challenge outside of Fallen Spire (since they have HBCs and Spire beams - I don't want to hard-counter them though).

Yep.

and of course give no AIP
That's a no brainer. Neinzul Warheads and Miners don't increase AIP either

Remember when fleet ships had their own shield values? Remember that maddening feeling when the AI seemed to make perfect shield rolls and you missed every one? This Guard Post can bring all of those wonderful feelings back, only in a much more visible and elegant fashion.

The following is a snippet from the Mantis report, which covers the mechanics in a little more detail

Brutal Core Guard Post - Displacement Field Generator

This Guard Post creates two mirror images of every other AI ship and building on the planet. These mirror images do no damage but are otherwise indistinguishable from the original unit. The Guard Post itself has 5 mirror images scattered throughout the system. These mirror images do full damage, and the Guard Post may swap positions with one of its images whenever a player-controlled ship enters the system or when a mirror image is destroyed.

http://www.arcengames.com/mantisbt/view.php?id=11382

Also, here's a standard Guard Post designed to give starship-centric players fits:

Core Guard Post - Direct AI Link

This emplacement allows the AI to directly control the weapon systems of everything on the planet, guiding its units' shots with incredible accuracy.

As long as this Guard Post is alive, all AI units and buildings on the planet gain 100% range, the armor of all player ships is reduced to 0, and player ships do not benefit from radar dampening.

**IMPORTANT NOTE** The range bonus WILL NOT affect units and buildings that are immune to attack boosts. AI Homeworlds are bad enough without 40k range Fortresses, let alone 106k range Superfortresses.

Mine aren't very imaginative. And they continue the trend of giving low-cap fleetships/starships a relative advantage, too. Meh.
