Newbie Question
« on: June 14, 2010, 02:00:17 pm »
Quick newbie question,

I've searched all over the manual, the wiki, and the forums, but I can't find this anywhere...

In the intel reports when I'm mouse of a sector, I get all the important structures up top in purple.  Is there a list of what the abbreviations mean?  90% of them make sense but there is one I'm having trouble figuring out what it is...

FF-Gen - What is this?

Like right now I'm scouting a planet that has:  Core AI FF-Gen x3, and AI FF-Gen III x1.

What are those?

Thanks...  I'm about 5 hours into my first major campaign (40 planet map) and having a great time.

Glad you're having fun, welcome to the forums :)

Those are forcefield generators; they project a circular overlay that absorbs shots against anything underneath them.  As they take damage, they shrink, and they take lots of damage from bombers and that sort of thing.  There are also some units which fire straight through forcefields as if they were not there.

Of Course!  I've been killing them all this time... but for some reason in my head they were just "Force Fields", and not "Force Field Generators"... so my brain didn't make the connection with the abbreviation.  Also they aren't particularly hostile in themsevles.  Right so Core FF-Gen is the Tier V Force Fields, and FF-Gen III is the Tier 3 Force Fields.  Okay this next planet is going to be tough.

Yea, Core FF's are tough nuts to crack.  I suggest bombers, high tech bombers, and lots and lots of bombers ;)  Some of the bonus ship types are pretty helpful at battering them down too.

I can't direct you towards a list as you've asked, but when I come across something I can't identify what it is, I use the planetary unit list on the right-hand side of the planet view.

This works best with a scout in the system, but the icons on the galaxy summary and the icon on the system unit list are the same so you can find the icon on the planetary summary and then get the full details from the tooltip that will pop up.
