[Newbie] I don't get it?
« on: April 06, 2014, 02:14:24 pm »
Hello,

I picked up the game five days ago and tried it yersteday. It was to complete my steam collection (250 games), and the game was always popping up on steam and looked at me like a cat who wanted a family. So I found a good deal on Green Man Gaming for the base game, and so I'm here.

I played the tutorial (but not the training campain) and I closed the game. Because I didn't understood what was the objective. I have to guess, destroy the AI? But what's the AI? And what's the waves? There's so many units! What's happening? Why is this and why is that? The game is big and that's very impressive, and so intimidating.

I like RTS even if I'm not good, and 4X games too (I'm even worse). But... There's no real mention about the objective, if it's human against human like most RTS games and everything. Or I'm just blind? Probably.

Yeah so, I'm just immensly confused by this game.
Also if you have tips against laziness I will take it.

Thanks!

1. You are against 2 AI opponents. These are computer-controlled. The introduction screen has the story line if you give it a minute to play out.
2. Basically, build up your army and infrastructure by taking strategic points and attacking the AI where it hurts the most (or benefits you). Lots of risk/reward situations. And you can't take everything, because for every target you assimilate, the AI gets stronger. Also known as AIP.
3. Play the tutorial.

This is a common reaction to the game.  Don't be afraid, and if you want, it is possible to move past it.

First off, this is a real strategy game, unlike most RTS games.  It is hard to implement strategy on a whole when a game's story forces you to take missions and conquer the way it tells you to.  In effect, most RTS games to date only allow players the ability to command tactically, not strategically.  What you are experiencing here is "having to form a strategy."

In effect, the only goal of the game is to cooperate with any other players, find the 2 AI home worlds, and destroy them.  How you do it is completely up to you.  There are many ways to do it.  Most are wrong, though fun, but there are still many right ways as well.  Remember always, losing is fun, as it shows you one wrong way, but you may see 10 other possible right ways bloom from it.

In addition to the core goal of the game, there are a few mandatory steps along the way.  You see, you cannot harm the AI home worlds at all initially.  You need to destroy the 5 shield networks that protect them.  Core shield networks B through E are easily dealt with, destroy but one shield generator on each and the network fails.  Core shield network A is a little tougher, you must destroy all but one to bring it down.  Once this is accomplished, then you can move in to win the game.

Finally, there are many other optional steps you can take.  You can get new technology, interfere with the AI, make other allies, etc.  It's up to you what you do, and what you need to accomplish your end goal.  All this is lumped up in the strategy you must build for yourself.  However if you wish for some ideas, go to the stats screen (lower left corner) and choose the objectives tab.  It's a little cluttered, and contains a lot, but in there it tells you all the objectives you currently know about.

Remember, this is a strategy game.  It will not tell you how to win.  It only tells you what you must do to win, and what you can do to improve your chances.  How you go about it is 100% up to you.

Thanks a lot for the fast replies, didn't expected that.

I have another question if you don't mind though: How different is a game from one to another? Is it always a fresh experience? Do you get bored fast (I doubt so but a newbie cannot know)? Thanks!

That all depends.  If you use the same seed and the same AI types, you could use the same strategy and it would result almost 100% the same.  There will be minor variation based on your reactions and stuff, but not much would change.  However if you always use another seed, different galaxy types, different AI types and settings, the game can vary quite a bit.  Even if you tackle it with a different strategy, it could play out differently with the same seeds and stuff.

Just remember, in the end, you are the one telling the story of how you won or lost.  It is a little daunting if you only play AAA games, but I find it nice not being told what I have to do all the time :)

Welcome to the forums, and to the game :)

There's quite a bit of variety to be had.  I might suggest something like:

1) Play vanilla (expansions enabled if you have them, but without any of the particularly special minor factions or whatever) til you get your first win on at least difficulty 6/6, preferably 7/7.

2) Play a different map type, with different AI types, with Golems - Hard.

3) Play a different map type, with different AI types, with Hybrids 4 on both AIs (not Advanced Hybrids unless feeling adventurous) and Wave Warnings off and Cross Planet Waves on.

4) Play a different map type, with different AI types, with Spirecraft - Hard.

5) Play a different map type, with different AI types, with Fallen Spire (and follow the progression from the journals)

6) Play a different map type, with different AI types, with your role set to Normal+Champion (and try to do all the champion nebulae to build it up as much as you can, etc)

7) Play a different map type, with different AI types, with Showdown Devices enabled, and try to win via the Showdown.

You may wish to increase the difficulty with each game.

Or just pick whatever settings you want, of course, but I figured I'd suggest a handful of game configs that would each give you rather different experiences.  And that's just for starters :)

Hmm, some of those "steps" seem like they would make nifty lobby scripts. I might try writing some of these.

Took me about 100 hours of play time to win my first game since I much used harder than average settings. During the 100 hours I just tested everything.. different bonus ships.. tech unlocks.. AI types and other settings.. what works and what doesn't and what I like.

What helped me the most was analyzing the games, testing my limits and theory crafting. Every time I lost I analyzed why I lost and how I could prevent it. When you die/do something stupid/lose something important just load an autosave and see how you could have done it better.

..I wish I could go back in time and experience the first 100 hours of AI War all over again.
Now I feel like a grandpa looking back on childhood.

Fair enough.  I get bored constantly playing one game all the time.  I have to switch it up quite often.  However there are some games like AI War that I come back to over and over again because it intrigues me.
