New Unity Engine
« on: June 18, 2012, 01:37:59 pm »
It looks like the new unity engine is out.  Is this going to fix any of the Unity issues that have been identified, or is this largely a "we want this to work for IoS" engine?

I am curious if AI War will be upgraded to the new Unity engine as well.  Supposedly it supports Linux natively.  AI War on Linux along with the Linux Steam Client will make me a happy camper.  :D

As far as I'm aware, they only update the Unity engine if it's stable enough to not break anything in the games. So far, the new releases have contained a few rather "explodey" bugs that needs to be fixed before they can move on.

We're planning to upgrade AIW to Unity 4 a month or so after 6.0 (the AS expansion official release), as the 6.1 (or whatever) official.

Unity 4 removes PowerPC support, and while that's not a lot of our customers we wanted to get another official out that they could use before doing the upgrade, and there wasn't time to get it stable enough for that before the expansion (largely precisely because expansion work is ongoing).

Opened your save. My computer wept. Switched to the ST planet and ship icons filled my screen, so I zoomed out. Game told me that it _was_ totally zoomed out. You could seriously walk from one end of the inner grav well to the other without getting your feet cold.

Haha, yea, the quote and modify buttons are right next to each other and the interfaces look very similar.

This was better than what I did a few times when I was new at Arcen: accidentally using modify instead of quote to respond to someone.  It was very confusing for everyone involved ;)

I don't know how far out the Linux on Steam release is planned for, but wouldn't it be great publicity to be one of the launch titles for Steam on Linux?

+1'ing for this exact reason. (And seeing more things supporting Linux always makes me happy. :) )

I wouldn't be surprised if Valve coordinates with other devs to have a launch lineup --- I'm only aware of Left 4 Dead 2 being ported for launch, other Source games to follow. At the least, if they aren't thinking about doing that, they should be --- such a move would legitimize the move and strike back at the "people running Steam on Linux? How quaint!" response.

Only if Linux sales are worth porting games over to it. So it is up to the Linux community to support Steam on this.

All of them that can. Because Valve won't bother if no one is buying the game(s) on Linux. And if Valve doesn't bother, who will?
