Need some strategic advice please...

Ok, I'm really at a loss for how to handle this one. I found a planet nearby with and advanced research station, so obviously, I want it. On this planet is an AI Eye, so I don't want to send too many ships. Ideally, I would likely send in ships and try to take out the eye fast, but in this case, I can't. Why? Well, between the warp point and the Eye are two Fortresses, one of them is a Mk. III ! How do I take this planet? Any ideas?

Try packing a transport or two full with bombers. Fly in and dump them on top of the EYE and take it out. Then blob the crap out of the fortresses. Should work.

I assume the concern is that the fortresses will take out your transports. If you spread a moderately sized bomber force out over, say, half a dozen transports the fortresses won't be able to get all of them, and the bulk of your force will get to the Eye. As an added bonus, your ships will unpack faster as well.

An EMP missile won't disable the fortress (I don't think), but it'll stop most of the other defenses, giving you enough time to blow the eye with a handful of mkII/III bombers and send the rest of the fleet in (AI forts really don't do much against bombers).

I've been in a similar situation recently. Two transports with 45 (ish) bombers in them, plus some bomber starships will drop both forts within fifteen seconds and the AI Eye will only reinforce the planet if the number of defenders drops below HALF of the attacking force (I think).

I imagine there will be a heck of a lot more than 45 defenders, so the eye won't need to be killed that fast anyway and you can simply load the bombers back into their transports and do the deed before bringing in your other attackers.

I took some bombers and a few tanks and took out the eye first, I wasn't able to wipe out both forts, but I did get the Mk. I one, and I'm rebuilding for another run at the Mk III one. And now that the eye is gone, I can send in a bigger wave. Thanks all!

Ok, so now I have another problem, same planet, now the Eye is gone, but when I send in a mixed wave to take the rest of the planet, it gets eaten up by a bunch of laser guardians, who then want revenge, and start heading for the planet my attacks came from, and take that planet. How does one stop Laser Guardians, and, a second question: Is there somewhere I can research a particular enemies weakness?

Go to your stat tab at the bottom left of your in-game screen or click on messages in the upper right.

once you've clicked there go to the reference tab, you'll find what you need there.

Ex: (select Laser guardian in the first drop-down and then apply the appropriate filter like: 'ships I can build' and your comparison type:one vs cap, then look for match-ups where the laser guardian loses.)

Ok, so, when I do this, I'm looking for the rows that say "loss" correct? A "win" means that the guardian wins if I'm reading this correctly?

You should be, if your selected ship is the standard fighter and you change the comparison to one on one and then change the filter to hostile ships you'll see a lose result for the vast majority of the entries,(click on result to organize by that category), which makes sense given the context.
