I think this came up earlier, but unfortunately it still seems we have a case of "When ARS attack" over on Boatki. I didn't see a ticket for this, or this original post, but maybe we drew the conclusion it was a feature, not a bug?

God I really hope that isn't removed. It's hilarious.

I encountered it recently as well.
I can already tell this is going to be a roller coaster ride of disappointment.

Well, it never did get listed as fixed on the changelog. Perhaps I should have made a post in the "what needs doing" thread when I saw it was still there.

..so I loaded my game.. and the Special Forces attacked me.. my PLANETS.. whipping boys.. just like a CPA. What's going on?

I know they were Special Forces because I had about 700 threat and about 3000 ships attacked me.

Now I can avoid this by saving right when they're about to attack and then quitting and loading that save. Then they will turn away and not attack me. Not that I'd be unable to stop the attack.. I did pretty easily in fact but it was a waste of time and resources.

That's because of this
Here is a save with normal threat doing this. (I'm in a place with better Internet now)

Though thinking about it, the turrets being destroyed and rebuilt and destroyed...and so on may have something to do with it.
I only saw like two TDLs and one SF guardian there, and none of them moved, just kept firing on stuff in range until killed.  Is that the save you meant?

That's the right composition, but they were "dancing" a bit before I saved that save.

Maybe it was just the turrets beyond destroyed and rebuilt until the remains rebuilders finally died off or something.
If AI ships are doing.. pretty much anything.. for example.. if you have planet A and planet B. Your fleet is on planet A and there are 3 full CPA Carriers about to attack planet B. You move your (big) fleet to planet B.. you save and load the game. The Carriers will now go for planet A. But if you didn't quit and load the game again.. the Carriers would have attacked planet B. So loading a save file resets the commands the AI gave to it's units. That's why Keith isn't seeing that weird behavior in Tech's save.

Anyway.. I was just wondering why did the Special Forces suddenly attack for no reason.

UPDATE: The Special Forces didn't attack this time.. they did 2 times in a row though. Weird stuff.

A bit late on the change, but I've only patched recently: I Really like the gradual unit deployment from carriers now- it gives the battle a much better feel when you're fighting a big fleetblob.

I think that "when ARS attacks!" is a 7.0 feature.

Not anymore! ;)

Do you have a save from around when that happened?  I know you said it doesn't necessarily reproduce but it'd be helpful to check why that planet was even being considered eligible as a staging area.

Glad you like it :)  I really find carriers much more "natural" now, with autotargeting-carriers off.  Before it was really a no-win situation because if you didn't shoot them they'd kill you, but if you shot them you'd be facing an uncomfortable number of core guardians.

Arrr well I don't have that exact save anymore but I do have one close to that.. BUT.. it doesn't happen with this save.

I think I fixed it in 6.049, it just wasn't filtering out human planets from the eligible list.  But thanks :)
