My Units Seem a Little Confused Lately
« on: June 19, 2012, 12:18:22 pm »
Not sure this is the right forum for this, but it doesn't seem like a technical support issue quite yet.

In short, in the last couple patches I feel like my ships will sometimes lose their movement orders and idle (usually after entering a system through a wormhole), typically when giving them orders to move several planets away through the map screen. This is not an engine damage issue, as once I find them and reissue the order, they move normally.

Also in our multiplayer games, we noticed ships on FRD were sometimes being flaky about targeting and pursuing uncloaked Spire Stealth Battleships.

In our time playing up 'til now, the ship control AI has impressed us with its competence, so this frustrating behavior stands out as being pretty unusual. I'm not sure if I'm just starting to notice these issues more as I get better with the game, or if a recent update has caused the AI to become sentient, and shortly thereafter, evolve laziness.

P.S. if this is not a known issue, I will try to find a save that demonstrates it, or reproduce it in more detail, but at this stage I'm working on the assumption it's a known issue or simple user error ("but I just KNOW I told those bombers to move, I swear!". Just wanting to confirm/get feedback before I start shouting things at my units that I'll regret later.

P.P.S. My internet connection has been somewhat unreliable of late, could that be causing this somehow?

Your internet connection should have no impact on this and while there were some recent changes to giving an FRD-move order to a different planet I don't think that accounts for everything you're talking about.  So I'm not aware of an issue like this.  A save and steps to reproduce (preferably in singleplayer, let us know if you can only cause it in multiplayer) would be quite helpful :)

Could this be related to Ships in FRD not always regathering at FRD point, which I still see even in the latest version?

I have only noticed it in multiplayer, but to be honest I haven't played single player in some time - having to much fun in coop!

I will pay closer attention to this in future, and try to produce a save game if I discover a scenario where the behavior can be reproduced.

Honestly, my first assumption is still that it's user error, it's such a nebulous thing and doesn't happen with much frequency at all.

I'll try to update this with some thoughts after I play some more.

RE: TechSY730

I don't believe that was the issue, but the FRD ship thing was happening in my friend's system, and I didn't see it directly. I'll talk to him about it and see if that might have been the issue.

Are you using Attack-Move or plain old Move?

I'm assuming from your FRD comment that you are not FRD-moving them when this happens.

Ah, that's an important distinction. I almost always have "auto FRD" checked on in the controls menu, though I may turn it off in specific situations. I also almost always give my units straight up move orders rather than attack-move.

It does greatly affect unit behavior because I'm not sure units remember their move orders.

I don't actually use attack-move so I'm not sure how they behave but I've tried issuing FRD-moves on the galaxy map to have units traverse several systems and then enter FRD at their destination.  (I play with auto-FRD off.)

The only problem is if there are any enemy units on any planet they are traversing, they lose their move order to pursue the enemy unit and then stop in that system, they don't remember the move order. (As of several patches ago anyway, have not tried recently.)

I actually don't use FRD that much really now that I think about it.

Remove the "Make Multi-Planet FRD Patrol" toggle in the CTRLS menu to restore their old behavior  ;)
