Aren't the electric shuttles the same way?  it'd essentially be a step between the beams and the lightning shuttles.

Though, I do somewhat better understand the main idea behind the Photon lances now.

Speaking of Homeworld, I used to play it quite religiously as well on the Complex mod.  I remember playing a game with 2 friends against the mod's ramped up AI with ma handicaps... we ended up with 2 Capital ship carriers (Battle Arks) launching Destroyers and Nuclear Missiles at our two motherships paired together in a wall of anti-missile defenses, trying to take out the nukes quick enough while dispatching the incoming Destroyers and Cruisers... .Oh man, those were the days...

On a more related note... Since the problem with the Photon Lance is that targets are too often moving about to let it do it's full damage, perhaps give it a 1sec paralysis, just to ensure it deals appropriate damage?  While the Riot is definitely the starship disruption ship, a small 1sec or even 0.5sec paralysis may be just the thing they need.  is there a way to paralyze movement without paralyzing the weapons? (Other than engines, but that's a different story)

Both of them were amazing.  I couldn't quite get into the Cataclysm one, though.  It just didn't grab my attention too much.

mm Cata had some cool new things (the modular mothership, for example), but also had some really weird ideas.. I never got very far in it either. Its much easier to pretend it never happened.

Cata? There were lovely repulsors on dreadnaughts that you could use to keep smaller ships away (with a technical minor detail that it did block the forward arc of the bottom ion turret). I actually didn't finish HW1.. got up to the very last mission, and was then distracted. Even reclaimed that Missile Destroyer off the Junkyard Dog to get them much earlier. Those ion array frigates were very easy to get by comparison... ;P
The Kadeshi fuelpods/swarmers were the pre-cursor to my ideal neinzul-type carriers (shame they couldn't be captured to refuel your own fighters).

BTW, Gravity Rippers paralyse engines without affecting weapons iirc.

I absolutely loved the gardens missions. They were amazing.. and then to find out at the end that they were your distant relatives... The story in hw1 was absolutely amazing, and well told. Even the manual the game came with, like 200 pages of lore/backstory.

I have not read the whole thread (who has the time ;) ). But one minor thing people missed in the beginning about the spire starships, they are not affected by gravity, this means they are actually pretty valuable if your enemy is a grav driller.

Sadly, the reason for this is a bit unknown. Some spire ships are immune to gravity effects, others are not. Dunno if it is thematic or game balance.

(I was surprised that the tier 1 spire campaign starships didn't ignore gravity effects).

...now I feel stupid. I did not know this! Perhaps this should be a theme?

If you make it a theme the spire blade spawners get even more powerful.

edit1:
I'll make a mantis issue for it.

edit2:
Done. I'm overdoing the mantis thingy a bit atm. Four new issues within the hour.

Alrighty, here is one case where I can reasonably consistently reproduce the "spire beams stopping mid-way" thing. When the thing with the spire beam is firing on a target ship, and the thing firing moves but the target ship remains still, and the target ship does not die, very often the beam will continue to go at the length it was at before moving, and just do a bunch of short ranged nothing.

Happens more often with AI Spire ships, as humans are generally smart enough to keep their spire beam firing stuff in one place while in the middle of their payload.

I actually still have one minor issue with starships at the moment - They seem really short ranged, including the champion.

I'm not sure about that. The Spire's range is pretty big (targetting issues aside) and Riots and Plasma siege are destroying anything that approaches my starship fleet ball. (Riots for the engine damage at 23,000 range.)

It's only been a week since the starships got a major overhaul, let's give it a bit more time before messing with them again?

Only the champion stands out as surprisingly short ranged to me. I know it's for the nebula battles but it leaves the champs kinda gimped in normal space.

Didn't I just read an AAR with someone killing both Homeworlds with just a Champion?

Not killing. Just neutering. For guard posts it works well due to its insane health and DPS. But you have to leave to recharge your shields occasionally.
