My first encounter with the new Special Forces
« on: September 05, 2012, 11:25:13 am »
So I went to find this nebula system right? K, as I entered this system, a few ships started following me. Then a few more. Then a few more. Then my buddy said "Uh dude, why is there 3000 ships on Kalkill?"

I looked behind me and went HOOOOOOMAAAAAAAIIGAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWD!!!!???

Then I died. Horribly.

Special Forces: "So we hear you liek champions".

And they're sporting a festive color scheme, to boot ;)

Don't take this the wrong way, I quite approve of our new Special Forces Overlords. xD I could've run away from them or kited them if it weren't for those blasted Gravity things. Once I was snagged by them, it was all over in a hurry.

They got their punishment ten minutes later when they camped the outgoing wormhole (are they supposed to do that?) and the Devourer came for a visit. The "OMNOMNOM" could be heard all the way to the AI Cores outside the Galaxy xD

About the new Special Forces: are they allowed to attack human planets under any circumstances? If not, then I have a mantis report to file. Else: what are the criteria?
If warheads can't solve it, use more warheads.

Once freed, special forces will behave just like normal threat and try to attack.
However, the conditions needed to free special forces have been tightened up quite severely. No longer is just firing on them going to do it. I'm not sure what the current freeing conditions are.

This bunch of 3000 ships did not free as threat, because as you can see, our threat meter is barely over 150. They did however not return to their gathering point. Instead they were content with camping the wormhole. (They did this again an hour or two later, but once we left the system, they returned to their staging point again.)

No, they're basically a defense-only force, because attacking the human just gets them killed ;)

Basically the AI's efforts are divided into two main categories: killing the human, and stalling the human long enough for the first part to get the job done.

Right now, in a non-superweapon game, CPAs are the main instrument in the first category.

Anti-armors look like they have the right multipliers to absolutely screw over the champion.. that couldntve been fun.

Trust me, comboed with the grav guys, that was a quick ticket to death :/ I had FOUR MKIV shield generators. They lasted a grand total of a few seconds.

There are some offroad scenario ships that are tailor made to completely murder champions. As in, like, a 3x multiplier to the shields, AND a 3x multiplier to the hull. Ouch.
...the numbers may be off though my point remains. There are no shortage of champion hard counters.

Try fighting with human champion against bulletproofs.... thats an exercise in futility. I needed to take care of defense with fleet and my champion was trading shots with few of these for few minutes... with completely no effects. It seems there is a silent wow to make light bonus on shell type guns :D

As for ships screwing up champions - there are many of these. Long range stuff also messes up with you - snipers and bombards will make champion life difficult :D

New special forces are fun - I had few nice encounters with them. Maybe not that spectacular but when preparing a planet to move through (it had csg on it) I was greeted by few hundred of ships - it didn't end up nicely.

So um... 1000 Mk. V fighters, 300 Mk. V Bombers and Frigates just showed up on this one world I was neutering.

I would have gotten away with it if it weren't for those meddling developers.

I can already tell this is going to be a roller coaster ride of disappointment.

What altplanetnames.txt are you using? Those were some rather sane names.

I just made my own, it's a mixture of planets from Sci-Fi games/movies/books and random dribble.
