Music Toggle
« on: February 04, 2011, 08:28:06 pm »
I can't find the music toggle. You know, some button, interface corner, quick key, or just some yet (by me) undiscovered part of the key bindings menu that lets you specify what key to press to turn the music on when it's off, and off when it's on. Without having to through all the menus to the audio options.

It must be somewhere, but I just for the love of me can't find it.

Help a brother out :X

Why on earth would you want to turn off the music?  ???

Anyways, there is a way to get the pause screen to pause the music, but of course the game is paused then.   :D

Because as good as it is, I sometimes want some damned quiet so I can think ;)

So...no key?

May I suggest that one be included, one faraway day?

Or, to speak of utopia, a whole "last track" "next track" "play/pause" console somewhere on the screen?

You can turn the music volume down independent of the rest of the sounds in the settings menu. I do agree that a small music control menu would be nice though. In my dream world it also plays MP3s in game so you can throw together your own soundtrack and toggle through it. Probably some sort of overpriced licensing fees for that, though.

If you know how to convert MP3s, to OGGs, you can have the game engine play them. Just stick the converted files into your music folder (the ingame sub-folder of the music folder to be specific).

Still no possibility of menu-less ingame control, huh? Where does one suggest that kind of thing!
Ah well. Not like it's going to happen in the foreseeable future, what with 5.0 being done and attentions going elsewhere.

By the way, I just want to say: Hive Golems are really no fun. I just had 1000 mkII ships attacking my evil knowledge raid, and with one release of the wasps, they were gone. Took no longer than 20 seconds for them to clean the entire system. Poof. Feels almost too easy.  :o

To suggest it, go to the Mantis bug and suggestion tracker at http://www.arcengames.com/mantisbt/

Sadly, that uses its own user names; it does not copy from the forums.

However, you almost certainly can use the same user-name. (In fact, I would recommend doing so, as it makes it easier to track your discussions and to credit you for ideas.

And yea, hive golems have not been touched (balance wise) for a long time, and deserve a bit a rethinking.

Well, if my old Mantis login for the DF tracker still works, that'd be nifty. Hm. Seems like it doesn't. For shame, it appears not all bug trackers are the same! Doom!

Anyways, Hive Golems. In a way, what they can do is absolutely awesome. It's a sudden, unconditional rampage of total annihilation. Really a thing to watch. Might there be a way to preserve that while still balancing them somehow? Sticking a resource cost to drone creation?

What, the upkeep cost not enough for you?  I'd rather not spend all my economy on repairing a golem.  ;)

Why on earth would you want to turn off the music?  ???

Because it gets very chaotic when you have the music on, sound effects on, and five people talking simultaneously on Skype trying to coordinate stuff in a multiplayer game.  Since I almost exclusively play AI War as a multiplayer game, I probably haven't heard more than 5% of the music, and definitely nothing from any of the expansions that hasn't appeared in stuff like trailers, because I ended up turning it off almost immediately in the first multiplayer game I played...which was the day I bought the game.  I'm sure it's great and everything, but I already have enough trouble keeping track of all the blips and bloops that are informing me how I'm about to lose the game this time.  Heh.

Ahh, the 5 ppl on Skype thing.  I was actually curious myself what your problem was with the music ;) up till you said that.  I can barely hear music over 3 other people on Skype/Vent so I hear you on that one.

I just cut the volume if it interferes with conversation when I'm listening to music and talking on games. But maybe that's not something that would work for you. I've always been able to keep music separate from other things in my head so I can easily listen to it and do other things at the same time. Although not if I was trying to follow lyrics. But something that's all instrumental, like everything in AIW, wouldn't be a distraction from conversation for me.

Personally, when I play MP I go into settings and turn it to a soft, but still audible level. That way I can easily hear my friends through Skype while still getting to hear the music softly in the background. Having it on full volume while trying to listen to friends is hard, but I also don't like having no music, feels so empty... I'm glad the Music slider is separate from the Master slider, make altering just the music volume easy.

Hah. Sometimes I need to cut the music because I'm talking to someone, sometimes because I need to play special motivation track from outside the game, sometimes because the game plays a track I've heard too often already, sometimes because it plays something that doesn't suit the situation, and sometimes it needs to be offed because Quiet! Technological noise! Le Quiet!!

And a short while after every one of these sometimes, I need to turn it on again.
And going all the way through the audio menu for that is annoying. Rargh!
