Music
« on: August 27, 2009, 09:24:24 pm »
I was just reading your blog entry on the negative review and one of the things that came up was music.  Now let me first say that I love most of the music for AI war, it's one of the things that sold me on the game.  However there is one track that I really think needs to get the boot: Thor.

The duet of the synth flute and electric guitar is just plain grating.  Thor variation is fine, but regular Thor just takes me out of the game.

Would I screw anything up with the game if I just removed the music file from the folder?

Nope, you can remove ogg files and/or add your own.  A number of people have commented that they don't like Thor -- my initial reaction to parts of it also were not that great, but I actually really like it now.  It's one of those ones, for me, where it is so different that it takes a bit of getting used to, but then I really like it after that.

But I realize not everyone will agree, so if you want to remove a track then nothing will be hurt by it.

I like this track, I don't find ANYTHING wrong with it.

Things like this really are just super subjective.

Yeah -- me too, now.  It just took me a while to get used to it when Pablo first did it.  But I really love the interplay of the flute especially there near the end.

You said it. :)  But I also don't want to force anyone to listen to something they aren't a fan of.

Oh, of course. I think it's pretty cool, since AI War is one of the few games I've seen where you can customize all the art type assets.

Yeah, I figure there's not reason to hide stuff in WAD files or whatever.

Oh good, so I'm not the only one who mutes my audio when Thor comes on?  ::)

I can't say I'm a fan of that song, either, though I love the variation. I think that an in-game music control might be really good for the default music, toggling whether the song gets played or not. I don't think a lot of people are going to bother going into the music folder and moving out songs they dislike, whereas an in-game toggle in the settings menu (perhaps accompanied by a play button so you can figure out which track is which?) would get their attention and make them feel like they have more power to customize the soundtrack as they see fit. This might fall under 'nice-to-haves', but I worry that dislike of one or two songs and lack of knowledge or skill regarding changing this outside of the game could make people dislike the music as a whole and disable it altogether.

I was thinking either that, or allow the players to chose a music directory, so they could make their own play lists without mucking around in the in-game music folder.

Bear in mind the game only plays ogg files, and that won't change -- there is a $1000+ license fee, plus royalties, to play mp3 files which is why few games do.

At best, this feature is a nice to have, though; it just makes easier something that is already pretty easy.

Yeah, well, MP3 is stupid and needs to die. Most of my music is already in .ogg format. I mean really, its like the JPG of the audio world, its awful :P

Aside that - there is nothing stopping anyone from throwing on the trance.fm stream or something like it to get into space mood either, i agree with whats been said, music is subjective and from 10 people, all 10 will like something else more.

Given that most people have proper music players its not a huge bother, or even a small bother (which is why i find reviews mentioning music absolutely silly - there is a mute button for a reason!) If i don't music i switch it off - so no big deal at all, imo.

Personally, I think the composer's a quack, but what do I know?  ;)

Hahaha!

I love the feedback guys. To be perfectly honest, Thor was one of those 12 AM to 5 AM compositions. I don't mind at all if ya'll don't like it. I've written a new track now to replace it. This one I think is pretty awesome. Hope you enjoy!

I think it was a great track, it's just one of those divisive ones, unfortunately.  Perhaps flute/electric guitar mix is just too Avant-garde. ;)
