Multiplayer?
« on: December 16, 2010, 11:52:36 pm »
Hi all,
Just wondering is online multiplayer avaliable because a friend and I would really like to play Co-op but we're not overly sure if we can, and if not are they going to add in a multiplayer feature in the future.
Cheers

http://www.arcengames.com/mediawiki/index.php?title=AI_War_-_Multiplayer

It is a Co-Op game after all :P

EDIT: Oops, thought that was the how-to page. Well whatever, you play multiplayer the same way you do single player, only said friend connects to your IP address in the "Join Multiplayer Game" button. Though you need to forward some ports if you're behind a router or anything. Otherwise it's identical to setting up a single player campaign.

Forward dem ports!

I don't remember what they are off hand, but I'm gonna go look, as it's something I need to do myself since I got a new router. Or play on a VPN program like Hamachi.

EDIT: Derp. Here I am looking at the manual completely forgetting it's in the main menu and in the settings >< Default is UDP port 32320 but that is of course, configurable in the settings.

AI War does not just tick off "Co-op Mode" as part of its feature list. There are several mechanisms at play specifically to enhance multilayer experience and accessibility. The two that come to mind are automatic changes in difficulty depending on the number of players (so that, for example, diff 7 is roughly the same in single player and multiplayer), and the ease of managing players, dropping and adding them as a game progresses (which allows for long games and incorporating people with hectic schedules).

Regarding the technical help you need...my advice is to take it slowly, and periodically post back here and don't give up. You certainly won't wear us out troubleshooting, but you absolutely could wear yourself out. It is probably a simple fix once we identify the issue, but it could take a while to find. The developers have demonstrated extraordinary patience working with my friends odd dual-network card setup, which caused odd problems. Also in my router, for port forwarding I can input all the settings and apply it, but unless I tick this one little checkbox the port is not actually forwarded...took me months to find that. Good luck with tech issues, just give it time and don't get frustrated.

When I last played AI wars I vaguely remember a "Test if hosted game is joinable" button, but I can't remember for the life of me where that was. Can someone direct me to it please?

If anyone can give step by step instructions on how to set games up with Hamachi after the stage where both players can see each other in a hamachi server, that'd be awesome!

If you both are in the same hamachi server you jjust join hte other's game via LAN like you actually had a LAN between you. One host the other one push join multiplayer game? And that's it.

That Hamachi thing is horribly slow. I would port-forward instead. I would also use a relatively low port number, like 13000 or 14000, as a friend of mine had trouble with his ISP or whatever blocking port 32320 (which is the default AI Wars port).

http://www.portforward.com/ is a decent resource.

A question and an answer all cuddly hugged  inside a single package. :)
Do you have to include the port-number in the IP you are trying to connect to?
(It sounds fairly obvious to me, but I see no mention of it and I can understand that an unexperianced person in this field may not come to that conclusion.)

Nope. As long as the port is forwarded through the host's router, you just have to punch in the host's IP and it should connect just fine.

I know in Tidalis you both have to have the same port enabled in the settings (32320 by default) but I dunno if this is the case in AI War or not, since I usually only ever play via LAN.

Yes, this is a great co-operative multi-player game. One of the best, in my opinion.

I have played about 50 games to conclusion, always with my friend.

We often split into roles, one playing the primary offensive role and the other playing the primary defensive role.

Its a fantastic game, you're going to love it.

Wow, I've only played one game to completion, counting both multiplayer and singleplayer.  :-[

Then again, I try to restart a game whenever something major changes with the seeding process, which has happened a lot recently.

lol same here.... Actually only played to the end once on a 10 panet map alone. Mostly (is that a word) to test the new patch and see what happens IF you win..
