Mixed mark reinformcements?
« on: September 17, 2012, 01:09:36 pm »
Anyone else noticing that the AI is getting mixed mark reinforcements?
This seems a bit odd, as Keith has said that the new mixed mark stuff is supposed to only impact waves.

Sadly, I did not have reinforcement logging turned on at the time, so there is no log for me to post.

It shouldn't be doing that, let me know if you do get a log/save of it happening.  There're a lot of things that could make it look like that's what's happening.

I'll turn on reinforcement logging later tonight and post it up here, pointing out a Mk. IV planet that I saw going few guarding ships to lots of guarding ships, some of them being lower marks than Mk. IV.

I saw this too, but I thought it was deliberate, like the mixed-wave marks.  In my case, I was very surprised to discover a few Mk V ships hanging around on a Mk IV world.  I'll see if I can find a save or log of this occuring.

Well, I haven't been able to reproduce the mixed mark reinforcements so far, but it is pretty trivial to show mixed mark guards at game seed. I'll see if I can "cook one up".

As for the Mk. V ships on the Mk. IV worlds, there is actually a pretty good mechanic to explain that, Mk. upgrade "trade-ins", where the AI can scrap 2 ships of a ship type Mk. N to get 1 ship of that ship type Mk. N+1. Among other things, it helps keep the number of ships in the game pruned a little bit.

Is this actually something new?

When I look at a planet in the galaxy summary it has always had most ships on the planet the mark level of the planet but there is always a scattering of ships of different marks.

Hmm, I just checked the oldest save I have which is from October 2010 (no clue which patch version) and it looks like 5 to 10% of the ships on a planet are of a different mark level then said planet.

Checking my most recent game actually gives a lower number of 3 to 5% of the ships on a planet being a different mark. (I'm ignore ships of mark 'Other' for this.)

That matches with what I remember, in that most ships on a planet will be of the planets mark level but there is always a small number of ships that are not.

Sure, different marks on a planet is fine, but when a planet is reinforced they should be getting ships of the planet's mark.

Oh, slightly different question.

I use the galaxy summary for determining what mark of ships are defending a planet, I'm usually out far enough I don't see the actual reinforcing ships individually so I went with what I'm familiar with.

The reinforcement log is the best place to get the answer to this I expect.

One way I can imagine this happening: apparently the Turtle and other AI types that don't get waves actually do get "waves" that work as reinforcements.  If the mixed-mark mechanic applies to those "waves" you could presumably get mixed-mark reinforcements.

Hmm, yea, that could do it.  That would be fine.  But I don't recall if Turtle actually functions that way.
