Looking for Advice: First Game
« on: September 04, 2009, 07:30:22 am »
Hey everyone,

So me and my friends read the RPS article on AI Wars and were instantly intrigued.  It's taken a couple of weeks to get everyone organised, but we're ready to play our first game (we've all dabbled in the tutorials so we're somewhat prepared).  We want to experience the full AI experience so we're going AI level 7.  My question is; what's a good number of planets to play with 4 players for our first game?  Also is it "best" (subjective I know) to play with all ships unlocked?

Thanks!

Can't comment on the latter two questions as I've only played one full game myself, but if you're well acquainted with rts games then I'd suggest level 8 AIs for the full experience. Played my first game with two 7.6 random moderates and never really struggled. Being overly cocky, loaded up two 8.6 AI's with a friend and we ended up quitting around the 40min mark due to the end already being in sight (450 stealthing autocannons with 85 speed...yea, hehe).

If you want to be a bit cautious, go for 7-7.6. If you don't mind losing, go for 8 (I haven't played 8, only 8.6).

(Are the differences between each AI level described anywhere? 8.6 AIs started at tech level two, so I'm wondering when that'd change back to level one.)

AI 8 is still I, 8.3 starts at II.

Welcome to the forums, Diggs!

My thoughts on your questions:

The game was originally balanced around 80 planets, and even though there are very small galaxies available now, that's still a good size to go with; I wouldn't go any larger than that, and I would avoid anything lower than 40, for sure. Somewhere from 60 to 80 should work out well, though I'd recommend more toward 80, particularly considering the size of your group.

As for ship types, there's not too much harm to be had by avoiding simple, but you'll come across some more unusual or difficult to utilize ships on normal or complex. Normal includes things like cutlasses and vampires, which are melee-based ships that damage enemies by colliding with them. They play a bit different from your typical ship. Normal also has more specialized ships like snipers (which are very weak, but great in large numbers for picking off specific distant targets) and infiltrators (which are immune to force fields and can damage ship engines, slowing or stopping enemy ships). Complex introduces ships with some pretty interesting and unique abilities, such as teleporting ships that can travel large distances almost instantly, etherjet tractors (which trap enemy ships with a tractor beam, allowing them to drag the ships out of the battle), and munitions boosters (which boost the attack of nearby ships). If you go with simple ships, you'll still have fun with the game and the ships it has to offer, and you won't run into the problem of getting stuck with a ship type that you're not experienced enough to utilize well. The selection of simple ships is still rather varied and interesting.

Others' opinions on this would be great, too, particularly if they think I'm spouting lies. :)

I have no multiplayer experience, but I would definitely avoid Complex on my first go. I would also use Simple Maps (No Hubs), as Realistic maps take a bit of effort to read easily for new players. Turn off Astrotrains (frustrating) and use Easy or Medium AIs on AI 5 or 6 or so.

The Hard AIs in this game are killers and AI7 is quite strong.

If Ashery easily beat a recent patch at 7.6 with 80 planets and no special options in his first game, he is a much better player than me (and probably better than you).

I have played this game a LOT, and AI-8 on 1.201 with complex ships is like playing against a cobra. It will come at you from all corners and only needs ONE successful strike seriously crippling your fleet or killing your orbital and its game over.

Your worst enemy is probably yourself: the strategic game moves very slowly (games take many hours) and impatience will get you killed.

I usually stick to 40-80 planets, depending on the number of players we have. My first few games, I just stuck with the Simple ship type, so as not to be completely overwhelmed by the sheer volume of content this game has to offer. I've worked my way up to complex now with everything checked, but I do turn off Teleporting ships from time to time.

Thanks for all the advice.  We ended up going with 60 planets, simple ships against a 7 AI and a 7.3 AI.  We've been playing for about 3-4 hours now and it seems to be working fairly well, if a little easy.  Do the number of ships the AI use scale with the number of players in the game?  Because it seems like we vastly outnumber most forces so far.

So far our strategy has consisted of us each picking a "brand" of space ship to specialise in, building up large numbers of that type then all rolling over a planet together.  I was wondering if more tactics come in to the game with a wider range of ships to play with?

Difficulty wise, that sounds about right considering your strategy, and if you're only playing with simple ships, that strategy will serve you well early on when knowledge is in short supply. With complex ships things definitely get more...interesting. Face a couple waves of etherjets and you'll know what I mean ;)

Can't say how the game scales with multiple players, unfortunately.

Really, though, provided you keep the AI progress under control, it should be a fairly easy game to complete. 8.0 definitely seems to be the sweet spot for a challenging game that a sizable number of the players will be able to win.
