Question, What do the Experimental Engineers do, I saw a fabricator in a game, but never managed to capture it.

They work really fast and self regen pretty quick according to memory

I meant more like did they have any extra abilities, that make them different from a scaled up T1 engineer.

Not really ... I looked up their stats in the in-game encyclopedia and the only new ability (in addition to teleport & cloaking) is the 3 min self regen & higher stats.  The regen isn't really an issue because I tend to use my engineers in packs.

The only thing of note that I see is that the Construction Rate is 6 (as opposed to 1/2/3 for the marked engineers).  I'm not sure what that means in actual gameplay

They build/repair things really, really absurdly quickly.  Stick one of them on whatever you're trying to get done, and it'll get done in a hurry.  Use more than one, and it'll finish before you started.  Also, now your resources have gone so negative that you'll be paying them back for the next three games you play.

means they build crap twice as quickly as a mark3 engi (if you have the resources available/incoming)

Well, If you want a serious improvement in engineers, you have to buy tech 2 AND tech 3, rather than before, where T2 was an improvement, via teleport, and T3 was then almost invulnerable, due to cloak. If I want more engineering capacity than I can fit in my supply cap, then in that case, I may only unlock T2.
Personally T2 is a serious improvement in engineers due to being able to have more and those engineers having a higher output.  Much of my defense strategy hinges on being able to cover critical points in a sea of overlapping forcefields with engineers under them to repair those generators not currently taking fire, and having enough engies is really important for that.
Have ideas or bug reports for one of our games? Mantis for Suggestions and Bug Reports. Thanks for helping to make our games better!

I do realize they are faster at building, but the point I was trying to make was that there is a dramatically greater improvement from T2-T3 than T1-T2. And thanks for the info on the experimental engineers.

Having learned several new things today, I may attempt playing a game, using Multiple control groups, and seeing if I can effectively use space docks.

Another thing is that you can hit F1 to change the right sidebar into the in-game encyclopedia, giving you a view of all ships in the game organized by mark level, keep on hitting F1 to cycle through pages.

This way you could get an idea to see if that experimental or Core fabricator is worth taking or passing on.

That is useful to know, So I can see that stats of units from a fabricator before capturing it. Thanks.
