Linux Version Planned?
« on: January 28, 2013, 11:41:08 pm »
I was wondering if a Linux version of the game is planned, now that Unity engine supports Linux?

From previous posts it appears that the Linux version is delayed as the latest Unity is 10x to 100x slower at loading runtime assets than the currently used one even on Windows and Mac. As Arcen uses runtime assets quite heavily, this would make the game unbearably slow.

So no Linux until Unity fixes their loading routines or an acceptable workaround is found.

Ah that's a shame. Hope that gets resolved sometime soon

On the site it said it runs pretty well on Wine and that's an understatement.
I've been running the game plus all expansions on ubuntu 12.04 LTS for months now without so much as single issue.
Sound and visuals work perfectly and there is no noticeable performance hit.
A linux version would be nice but it's understandable if they haven't the resources to do this (Unity has some nasty bugs when running on linux).

John Carmack just said that it's not worth porting games to linux - making them run on wine is much more efficient for the same effect.
And since you said it does run fine on wine, I'd like arcen to spend the time on more updates, not porting :)

Wine is a whole lot of overhead If I remember right, though.

I had it running on windows 7 before I tried it out with Ubuntu on the same machine (4 x 2.6Ghz  8GB RAM) and I don't notice any performance penalty.
Tried the same on a (very) old laptop and didn't notice anything either: it ran about as slow (and laggy) as it did under window XP.
The updater also works without a problem even if several posts on WineHQ claim otherwise.
