Has anyone been able to run AI War successfully on Linux yet?

Pretty sure not, but mono and wine are always evolving.

Don't think its possible with the current state of Mono - Mono has trouble supporting .NET 1.1, nevermind 2.0 or 3.5. Then there is the SlimDX model - Linux natively supports OpenGL, and games based on that are pretty 'easy' to get working. Games based on the DX model don't like Linux much due to how MS has DX integrated into the Windows kernel.

I've tried (And was very nearly successful) in running it with PlayOnLinux, but there was something about POL only working with an older version of .Net and AI War using something it couldn't handle. Don't remember the bug now but it was something very specific and .Net related I believe.

I seem to recall that AI war dropped to .NET 2 somewhat recently so it might be worth another go.

Yes indeed. Acidweb tried it after the drop and it still failed. But, playonlinux was not what he was using.

I'll have th throw Linux back on my Laptop and try again. I guess the big issue now would be SlimDX working.

Really, SlimDX is just a pure .NET wrapper around DirectX and Direct3DX functions.  So, I'd be more concerned about Direct3DX than anything else, but we shall see I suppose.

Well, I got to a point where I could start up and see the menu, but all sorts of redrawing issues occurred and the background was white.

When starting it in fullscreen mode, the background would show, but not the menu.

Starting a new game will crash the game on my setup, running OSX10.6 with wine-devel 1.1.36.

I might have a problematic setup, as the Radeon X1600 in my MBP is not very well supported in wine.

It's a bumpy road just to get the menu up, so stick to dual-boot for now.

I'm no WINE expert but I've used it before on many occasions. I would say that the issue is not SlimDX, but DX in general. I really wish DX was not such an awful pain to port.

Steam runs fine on Wine so it should be easy to try out on Wine. I'll give it a spin when I have some time.

Try just the AI War installer with POL like I did. You can install DirectX and .Net directly for programs right in the menu, so it's probably the easiest or most likely to work.

I tried to launch AI War 4.0 with current wersion of PlayOnLinux. The game started but crashed on GameInit step 5. oops dialog suggested sending crash report to game developer. It can be downloaded here: http://static.uptimebox.ru/Crash_2010-10-30_131922.zip

There's a thread about Wine support here: http://www.arcengames.com/forums/index.php/topic,7246.0.html

In short, the Unity versions seem to work very well under Wine without doing anything special. Let us know though if you still have problems.
