Just want to say something
« on: August 21, 2010, 11:53:40 am »
I bloody HATE the Marauder Dagger Frigates. HATE with a passion! I have defenses that can withstand huge AI waves and CPA's... and yet the bloody Dagger frigates come (during an AI attack of course) and roll over my defenses with ridiculous ease. Their range is higher than any corresponding AI or Human ships, and they seem to have a higher RoF than MLRS units.

To take on a group of 40 I lost almost every turret in one system and over 60 ships... thankfully they decided to go harass an AI system :/

Just wanted to get that off my chest.

I HATE MARAUDER DAGGER FRIGATES!

*ahem*

Ok then, carry on :)

[Yes I realize I probably am missing a perfect counter unit, but I can't think of what it could be and am getting tired of losing blobs of ships and turrets to them - don't really want to turn them off as I want a "more full" game experience, but my nerves are getting frayed ;)]

I join in on the hatred. Every time the Marauders show up, I immediately flee the system in order to escape their suicide bombers and allow their frigates to mop up the system. The headache comes when they start flooding through gates :(

My luck is such that they always show up on My systems when the AI is attacking me :/ - I have only had them show up on AI planets during raids 2 times.

Oddly enough, fighters seem to be their counter, or at least what I use.

It takes them a while due to the fighters low damage, but the dagger frigates do small damage back themselves.

Yes, they are an annoying unit, but the marauders (hostile, friendly and the ones you can build are all the same unit) were designed with the few, but strong, units approach as compared to most of the rest of the game which is many, but weaker, units. This causes them to win pretty much any 1v1 battle and it's intended that you have to swarm them to take them down.

Just ran into them in my current game, swarmed them with 206 fighters. Lost 15 fighters to destroy 23 dagger frigates. Mostly Mk II fighters but it works.

I've never really had too much of an issue with them, though yes, they tend to destroy all structures with ease, along with forcefields, command stations...

Though it's a rare occasion, and they spawn far out at their "vagabond" secret hideout, giving you time to muster something.  Though for me, they usually spawn on the AI worlds.

I had huge problems with them to start with. And they can really mess up a planet if they get in far enough, but I have no problems with them any more. Send a load of fighters- I would suggest at least MKII- to fight them before they get in range of anything important. They should mop them up pretty quickly. Trust me, this will solve this problem.

I've had no issue with the Marauders attacking me. Maybe i just have that luck or your not moving fast enough to cause fighting spurts on other planets to draw their attention. o.O!

It could be that I am moving too slow yes :/ - but thats how I play

I have a ships cap worth of MK II fighters on a border world near the planets next on my raid list, with how much bordering worlds reinforce themselves this late in I need just about every ship I can muster to take them on. The Marauders, of course, are too danged stubborn to attack worlds near where my main fleet force is - they go for my core defense worlds that are good vs AI but not them... and those worlds always seem to be 3+ hops from my main fleet.

Edited due to lack of sleep & caffeine making me misread quoted post ;)

Hmm haven't tried this but would a couple of spider turrets spread out around your home worlds help. I've noticed that the marauders always spawn really far off and if they don't have really high engine health you may be able to stop them before they get in range.

They are immune to Sniper shots, which includes Spider Turrets. Every defense glob I build has a minimum of 20 Spiders, they don't phase Marauders one bit.

You could try... fortresses if you have a control group of engineers to quickly assist... I don't know for sure whether or not the fortress outranges them, because if they're in range of the fort it's basically destroyed within a few volleys from the marauders.

Then again I don't know how much actual damage fortresses do upon such ships.

Out of curiosity, can Riots damage their engines?  The laser modules in particular can shoot really far (roughly) but don't count as sniper shots.

Might be worth a try later on. As for now, I'll just go with Fighters. Sheesh, it would be great to have all the bonuses and penalties listed somewhere, because it starts to become REALLY hard to stay on top of all the hidden "features" of shiptypes >.<

If they would be kind enough to attack a system where I have Riots in place I could tell ya, they are good at avoiding anywhere I have a proper response force though :/.
