Or roll out a golem. Hive golem.

I have three of them, and I'm going to start a new game now :(

I think the Spire Shield Guard Posts are just fine. I think some stuff just needs to be a little excessive to make it interesting. I haven't really had much trouble with them. You don't always need to destroy them either, unless there's some invincibility provider under the forcefield. Even then, Raid starships could take care oft those.

Part of the fun is having some really powerful stuff that you have to invest lots of resources (in this case troops) to battle against.

The new Eye removal mechanics makes a nigh-invulnerable post a real game-breaker.

Sorry, eventhough I have seen all the complaints, I disagree.
I've nuked posts that where under 2 FFs, 1 mk3 and a lower mark, Spire post are weak compared to those, and with a churgical strike they can be taken out quite easilly.
Having a Spire-shield under a mk3 FF can be painfull, when you need to nuke it to get rid of an Eye, but often taking the planet makes it a lot easier. Anyway, that happens once in x games*

*
x = no of games played
y = average no of planets per game
z = change of a nasty situation happening in your current game
1/(x*y)=z ... <= very small number :)

last 5 games I played on an average of 100 planets, and it happened once (I played 3 of those 5 game taking every planet)
1/(5*100)=0.002 ... <= chance of the next planet having a nasty situation based on my previous games.

When you end up with a formula like
5/(1*80)=0.0625 ... Thats quite a bit bigger number, but you still need to take 16 planets before you will see the nasties happen, on average. That would leave you enough room to take 15 planets, bolster your econ/defences, and accept the hit when you clean the 16th planet.

No, they aren't. Spire shields are in the multi-hundred-million health range (which is why, to be honest, I'd simply assumed their health was a typo). An AI mark 3 shield is only 80,000,000. This was changed somewhat recently, I presume, perhaps you haven't noticed.

Fair enough. So they're supposed to be mark IV planet-type major obstacles? That is, they're to be ignored whenever possible, and supposed to be a major challenge when circumstances arise (like Eyes) where they have to be killed?

Ideally, yes. I assume you mean the ones on the home planets? Or what mark are you referring to?

Basically all of them. Early game (when you've only got mark 1 and 2 ships) they're effectively unkillable, late game they require a whole fleet commitment to take down, so either way they're something to avoid whenever possible.

Obviously the ones on home planets can't be avoided, but honestly those SHOULD be insane. I think the spawning on the non-core ones should probably be toned down a bit, though, if they're going to be this big an obstacle.

Yeah. Attacking them really isn't feasible in any serious situation. If there is so much as a single thing with guns (Ion Cannon, Laser Guardian, a single fighter) below the FF, then any attacking fleet will probably be killed before they manage to take it below 50%.

Yeah, that makes sense.  Just looked at the values on those, and they are a bit high.  There's a x2 modifier on there that I'm going to take out on all the non-core ones.  We'll see what that does as a start, anyway.

Awesome.  I'm probably going to wait for version 5.009 before continuing with my new game (which I'm recording, and probably going to upload to youtube).

Well, technically, I haven't run into any spire shield posts yet, but you never know.
