Plus, it's not updating the "Latest Post" items for subforums properly, and sometimes it's not catching topics with new posts and moving them up to the top of the list.

How incredibly bizarre.

The theme hasn't changed for weeks, and the php files that contain those sorting and searching functions have never been edited - they're still the vanilla versions. The error log isn't reporting any (new) errors, nor does SMF report any errors in the database. I performed a backup in the last few hours, but that shouldn't have affected anything.

Looking into it.

I'm using this feature to read frequently and I didn't notice any problems. I will try to check if I'm missing some posts after using unread option.

Confirmed. After using latest unread topics there is quite a few posts that are left in unread state.

You might not have a problem. I haven't tracked down what causes it or a fix yet but I've found a bunch of threads on SMF users experiencing the same issue.

Okay, temporary fix in place; I've modified the above links to:

http://arcengames.com/forums/index.php?action=unread;all
http://arcengames.com/forums/index.php?action=unreadreplies;all

Which should find all unread topics (If someone could confirm that it would be appreciated). Normally, those links only find posts that were relatively recent, so I suppose it might some some obscure date related issue. I'll keep looking into that.

RCIX: Can you confirm where this is happening? The News and Articles forums are intentionally ordered by topic post date, rather than most recent reply.

I found out that my "problem" was because link with unread posts shows only recent ones by default.

It seemed to work correctly after using second link to show all unread posts.

The enitre "Development discussion category; it's annoying when it lists new posts but does not show what the newest post is.

Oh, you mean on the right hand side where it says latest post? That's actually not a bug, that's how it's always been - it only lists the most recent topic of that board, not any of the child boards. I'll see if there's a way of changing that.

Now I notice that most subforums do show the most recent post from their child forums, which surprises me as I remember having this conversation with Fiskbit a while back about they weren't doing that..

Plus, there's a phantom new post in the New Unit Ideas subforum which won't go away (i was the last to post in that forum).

The 2nd link that you posted seems to work for me rev, not sure about the first one(nothing showed up, but then again I had already hit the button at the top and possibly messed with some numbers in the database).

I think I've realized part of what my problem was.  I had window open on another computer(work computer) logged into the account and sitting on the http://arcengames.com/forums/index.php?action=unread;all;start=0 page.  For some reason even though I wasn't reading the topics there(or even using the computer for about a week), it automatically was refreshing and somehow marking them as being already displayed or something so they wouldn't show up on that page on my home computer.
