Just a quick question from a newbie
« on: October 10, 2015, 03:20:06 pm »
I've spent ages doing the tutorial, watching YouTube and reading various on line help guides, the amount of information and options is amazing but, also very daunting for a newbie, there is so much to take in that I found doing it in short small chunks the only manageable way for me to learn.
I have also copied Kahuna's guide for reference so I reckon I'm ready to be trounced by some AI.
One opinion I have looked for on this forum but, can't seem to find, although I am sure this question must have been asked previously is, should I start by setting up the parameters I think best for me / suggested by the guides or use the easy script and if I use the script does it cause problems if I then also edit some of those parameters say, number of planets, AI settings etc.?

I'd say it's completely reasonable to take on the game in bits and pieces.

Honestly, the way I learned was in a 1/1 sandbox game against 2 turtle type AIs with very few additional options on.  Learn your side then pick on the AI.  Once I was comfortable there, I went to 5/5 AIs.  Then 7s.  After that I went nuts playing the game very differently.

I offer that you start somewhere low and easy, with 80 planet maps.  Keep your AIP low and just learn.  This is one of the few games I have every played where it's fun to game over.  Play, have fun and improve.  You'll be hitting 7s in no time and as you get better you might someday take on the challenge that are the 10s (where game over is frequent and fun!).

Opened your save. My computer wept. Switched to the ST planet and ship icons filled my screen, so I zoomed out. Game told me that it _was_ totally zoomed out. You could seriously walk from one end of the inner grav well to the other without getting your feet cold.

The parameters Kahuna suggests are pretty reasonable if you're just starting out. I played my second game with them and 6/6 AI and had no problems :)

6/6 with the beginner script on shouldnt give you too much trouble. if anything, it might give you a slight challenge. you will very rarely get surprise attacks from the AI, so the only real challenge is preparing for the waves which, if you have Kahunas guide, should be very easy to deal with.

I'm not sure if anyone answered your question satisfactorily, so i will try to do it now. as i said earlier, the 6/6 difficulty with the beginner's script should be pretty easy. there shouldnt be any "problems" enabling or editing number of planets or other setting if you mean "bugs", but i dont think thats what you meant. i would recommend setting 6/6 beginners as i said, but with no extra options just to get your feet wet so you can learn the basics of the game. turning those options on however, might lead to a frustrating situation where you would have been able to better deal with it had you had more experience with the "basic" functions of the game. on the other hand, experience is the best teacher and enabling those options, while fully expecting to get trounced by the ai, might make you a much better player and prepare you for more challenges.

good luck,
