Have you heard the stuff in Tidalis yet?  Some of that is just absolutely my favorite.  But I'm really excited about the remastering work, too, and what's coming with CON. :)

I haven't poked my nose into Tidalis yet, but I plan to soon :) I am a big fan of good music.

It's a really different style of music, but I'm really loving it.  Alden Ridge is going to have yet another style of music, too, which I'm also excited about.  And CON is going to me more of the AI War style of goodness, but with whatever new twists Pablo comes up with to fit that, heh. :)

Firstly, thanks for the update on what to expect and look forward to in the near future. It really helps us view the big picture when we know what your game plan consists of and it's refreshing to have this kind of insight. :)

One question I did have pertains to AI Wars v4.0. Will migration to Unity in that update require us to completely re-install the game from scratch? Also, will the expansions act like plugins kind of like it is currently or will the game simply expand according to the expansions you have installed? I'm sure you have this all figured out already, but I was just curious.

Anyway, thanks for your concerted efforts to bring us one of the best games ever made and the continued support that follows to keep it fresh!

It will be a totally different executable, etc, so yea you'd need to install again, unless Chris does some sort of weird gymnastics to get the "updater" to totally resurface your installation directory ;)

But this install will be really really painless; with Unity it's basically to the point where you could play the game off a jumpdrive (though I wouldn't suggest that due to file access time, etc).

I can't think of any reason why the handling of expansions would be any different than it is now :)

My pleasure on the updates, Shardz -- I like to keep people up to date with what's going on, it's honestly less stressful for me that way because then people know where I'm coming from.

For the installation of 4.0, probably that will be a full install, yeah, although most likely I'll also have a version that works with the in-game updater in some fashion so that people who don't check our site aren't wondering why there is never another official update again or whatever, heh.  I did something similar when we switched updaters in order to make that work, that's something I'll be looking at more in July so that no-one gets unintentionally left behind.

The expansion handling will be same as it is now, I put a ton of work into the expansion handling with the first one, specifically so that we could keep adding more expansions down the line without having to reinvent the process.  As of the next prerelease, the CON expansion stubs are actually now in place, so that we can start internally doing the early stuff for the expansion.  But, the expansion mechanism is really flexible, so you can have CON without TZR, or neither and still get the free DLC, and all those sorts of permutations.  Really a ton of work went into making those easy back when I did TZR.

Thanks for the quick response, Keith & Chris! I had a feeling everything was worked out to a fine degree when you made the decision to go with Unity and all the work that would ensue to keep all functionality of the current build we are used to. This is all very exciting news and I can't wait to dig into the revamped packed with the new expansion. It truly is amazing just how much forethought and planning goes into this project to keep it running smooth, efficient, and current. If Microsoft was on the ball like this, I might like Windows 7 quite a bit more. LOL

Well, thankfully they apparently did (better, even) with Visual Studio, as it's one of the key tools in us keeping this up ;)

We do take vacations

Proof?  :P

Vacation.  Noun.  See entry for "Getting to implement cool new stuff for an expansion".

Thanks! My wife and I are really excited about it. Our little boy is 9 weeks away from his due date now, and he's getting stronger and more acive. He's always been active, but now really is kicking up a storm.  Good times, good times. :)
