Is there an archive of old versions of AI War?
« on: October 15, 2012, 07:50:42 pm »
I'm talking like, really old stuff from way back when. 1.0, 2.0, those really old major releases. Are those still around somewhere?

We don't have them up on the site here, but we do have a full SVN history since the beginning of time with the game.  If need be we can internally go back to any particular part of any day in the last four years (yes, 4 not 3 -- since the first alphas of AI War) and do a build from that.  So in terms of what is retained for reference purposes, we retain everything.

For playing purposes... doing a search for GamersHell or Atomic Gamer or similar are the best bet.  For instance, I just looked for 2.0 and here that is: http://www.gamershell.com/download_52410.shtml

Wow, looking over that features list makes me feel almost like looking at Half-Life's system requirements. It's like traveling back in time.
So much from the AI War of today that I take for granted. I actually looked for AI War after you mentioned, feeling like I wasted your time to an extent, and I actually couldn't find it so thanks a bunch for finding that! I'll have to give it a curious look and then... learn the meaning of "curiosity killed the cat"

In terms of keeping absolutely everything in backup, that's really smart. Seems really cool to be able to go back and feel nostalgic as well, if you ever had the time for that.

Edit: Oh my lord. Opening up 2.0 and looking around in it, it actually looks like a totally different game. For one, I get 40 FPS in menus which is... extremely weird, to be honest. I get a better frame rate in borderlands 2 at maximum settings. For two, all of the music is actually different, and not just in a quality way. They're almost remixes. The menus look much fancier and are actually almost easier to navigate...
I don't know. I can't say it's completely old and dated or anything. It's just really different. I've got to start a game of it sometime after this week.

I've got a bookmark to version...3.12, if you're interested.  Around 3.4 is when I had the most fun.

3.189 was the last, and longest-out, prerelease pre-unity, and I think that would be a better go-to than 3.120, but I dunno, depends :)

Part of what I was curious about was waaaaaaaaay back (apparently) when AI Progress was like, single-digit stuff. I remember seeing really old screenshots of people having like 2 AIP and such. I'm gonna be giving all of these a demo though, because it's interesting to see how far things have come. I actually had some interest when reading old game design articles by Chris about his decisions regarding how the AI would work and stuff.

I just know that the download is 3.12 and that it was "around that time" that I had the most fun :P

See, this is why you don't trust GDI. You must not support them, but support the brotherhood to free yourselves of their oppression.

Opened your save. My computer wept. Switched to the ST planet and ship icons filled my screen, so I zoomed out. Game told me that it _was_ totally zoomed out. You could seriously walk from one end of the inner grav well to the other without getting your feet cold.

I fot hooked on AIW back in the SlimDX days, and whilst I was really excited about the move to Unity in terms of what it allowed (plus coupled with the move to using Mantis for feedback/reporting), but by-heck I really REALLY hated those first betas of Unity - I was trying to ween myself onto it but whenever I was playing the game rather than testing I would always pick the SlimDX version!

So glad I saw sense ;)

Yay, nod reference.

Also keith, would anything happen if someone took one of these and won a 10/10 instead of current version?

I would be amused :)  I think some of those had it a lot easier due to a hard cap of 2k ships per wave.

I double-godliked back then.  Admittedly, it was cheesed.  10/10 turtles on a 10 planet map with 8 homeworlds.
(And it still took three attempts!)
