It's the name that the first generated planet gets, every single time, unless you change the alternate planet names file.

If you play certain map types (notably X) it does tend to be a pain ;)

Even on map types other than X, it tends to have an above-average number of planetary connections because of being one of the first-seeded planets, so it's got a much-better-than-average chance of being a really pain in the rear central hub to the galaxy even if it's not visually in the center. :)

  • Avenger? I hardly know 'er!
It was the AI Homeworld on one of my games. But after I made my own altplanetnames.txt it's about as painful as any other given planet.
I can already tell this is going to be a roller coaster ride of disappointment.

Every time someone talks about Murdoch I feel obliged to quote Dark City.

...I'm not gonna be able to see the planet without thinking of that now.

That would explain why every single map conspicuously has a Murdoch on it, which is often the one planet with a name that's actually pronounceable.  We get to come up with ridiculous things to call all the rest of them over Skype based on whatever comes to mind when we see them (it's kind of like word association, except the in-game names aren't words, and it adds way more of an extra layer of fun than using an alt planet list would)...and Murdoch.  Heh.

this. It's the only planet name I ever remember. I always wonder how long it takes to show up when scouting.

I've a source code to the Elite (very old space sim) planet names somewere, I could put a list of them somewhere if people are interested... (The names are generated with a seed number)

I know there's a thread on here somewhere for alt planet name lists that would be a good place to post that, but I forget where it is.  I grabbed a Star Control 2 (slightly less old but just as great game) one from there that I've been meaning to use for single player games for a while, but I'd kind of miss the silliness of the names in multiplayer.

I filled my alt planet names file with names of real planets, fictional planets or nations, authors, historical figures, and mythological figures. It comes out with pretty good results for me.
