Irritating and annoying planet names
« on: February 18, 2014, 12:06:20 pm »
After playing the game extensively with a friend we came to the conclusion that the names are very irritating and highly annoying. Is there a way to change the names or is there a modification available?

Usually when we coordinate attacks and talk about our battleplans we get confused by the silly names.

In the AI War directory, subdirectory RuntimeData, there is a text file named altplanetnames.txt. One name per line there. Last I heard, the names are applied at game start so the lobby will have the old names, but they will be correct once you get in-game.

You can look the modding subforum for some good name collections.

There is also a way to change the names of planets in-game but I can't remember how off the top of my head. I think it has something to do with the note taking option on the galaxy map?

Yes, when entering notes you can also change the name of planet.

The thing is that the names tend to be extremely difficult to pronounce and we even mixed up some system due to the similiar names.

And the ping (F) being bugged doesn't help.

I use one of a few custom lists of real place names I'm familiar with: towns in Scotland; towns in the UK; towns in Germany, and towns in Japan.  That way I'm never confused about which planet is which when there's a notification.  I know that I have an Adv. Fac and core fab on Thurso, I know that Inverness is next to my homeworld and I can't help sniggering that one of the AI homeworlds is in Auchtermuchty.  The familiarity of the names allows little ambiguity as to where things are in my mental map.

Granted, it may seem a little less sci-fi, but lots of names for "new" places are just copied from old places anyway, so why wouldn't people name planets after towns or cities from earth?  An obvious example is that Dallas is a small village with a population of under 200 people.  All the Dallases in America are named after that one.

Is altplanetnames.txt covered in the Tip of the Day? If not, it should be.
