I didn't encounter this until today, and Shrugging Khan is now un-banned. Generally for something like this we only ban for a day, unless there's a repeat offense, so that's what wound up happening here.
In terms of the profanity thing, let's not be crazy about this. I very much understand the dislike of "hyper political correctness," but that's not what is going on here -- that sort of thing drives me nuts, too. We ask people not to swear profusely for two reasons:
1. It bothers some people, and we don't want to be exclusionary to them. We have many people who are younger or older than the "general gamer," and we want this to be a safe place for everyone. We ask that everyone speak like adults in a semi-professional setting.
2. When there's profuse and intense swearing, that often trends into other forms of verbal jibing, which is something we're really trying to avoid here as well. Not that there was profuse profanity here, or that there was any harassment of any other player -- the initial swearing was quite harmless, and something I might have said myself outside of these forums. But
broken window syndrome is quite well known, so we don't make exceptions -- if somebody complains about language, we ask the original poster to change it. If someone is being made uncomfortable by someone else's language, that's an easy fix, no?
If you're feeling oppressed, please take it out somewhere else. My own language is censored as much as anyone else's here. In high school and college, I fell into the typical speech patterns that you see in most PG-13 or R movies that have cautions for language. It's trendy, it's often funny, it's not malicious.
But it does bother some people, and it's not exactly in keeping with the welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere we wish to cultivate here. So, as I censor myself around children, at work with other professionals, and on these forums, I ask that others censor themselves at least here. Automated filtering tools make my laugh,
for a lot of reasons.
This is my house, so to speak -- please do me the courtesy of not offending the sensibilities of my other guests here. In terms of the actual subject of this thread... I'm not sure what's going on. If you have a way to reproduce at all, we'd be very interested, as usual. As always, thanks to everyone here for looking out for the game, the community, and so on. Sometimes we differ on how we best feel like that should be accomplished, as I suppose is the best way to characterize what happened here, but let's not let that spiral out of control.
The perma-ban was way too harsh, but the direct defiance of our community guidelines wasn't exactly appreciated, either. Call it even?
