« on: February 07, 2012, 03:34:08 pm »
...the cookie monster can chase my units around a star system I want to be able to kill it! Again! Grrrrr

EDIT : If its not a bug, what triggers 'it' to chase units?

EDIT 2 : 22 views and I guess noone knows Keiths pet name for the Devourer Golem?

The thing is that they wanted to make the Devourer Golem impractical to kill, as it would take so freaking long.

However, due to the "firepower inflation" that took place during the 3.0 to 4.0 days, Devourer Golems became a lot less durable relatively. It got to the point where by mid game, it was practical to take on the Devourer Golem with starships and long ranged fleet ships.

So instead of buffing its HP even further, they just made it straight up invincible.

IIRC, Keith mentioned that some of the "super" units are going to have a hard time being made more durable, thanks to the fact that they are approaching the max of the data type used for the maximum HP field.

I have no problem with the devourer being invincible; that is the way that "minor faction" is supposed to affect the game. It is an invincible system-clearing menace that can impact both you and the AI.
Time to roll out another ball of death.

Oh, and to answer your EDIT1, question, its behavior is to queue move orders to a large-ish list of random planets. When it reaches the final planet on its list of queued orders, it then becomes idle. It then waits a bit of time to generate its next list of random planets to visit.

The problem is that when it idles, it then switches to the default behavior for "enemy to AI and Human" minor factions, seek out targets on the current planet to attack (sort of like FRD). Thus, for the decent amount of time it waits to generate that new list, it chases around units on the planet it stopped at, and woe to you if it chose one of your planets.

yeah but is it meant to break from its wormhole to wormhole patrol and chase / hunt downa fleet in a system?  Its easy enough to avoid when its patroling and I dont mind that its invincible, but if its going to chase hunt my fleet down then they should be allowed to defend themselves...

EDIT : Ninja'd  None the less, seems to happen a lot, normally once I have a full cap of everything....

Ah, the cookie monster...

I actually don't remember when it was made invincible, but so it is.  With a decent-sized Fallen Spire fleet (only the mkV stuff, I believe it can still eat frigates and destroyers) it's actually not hard to kill unless it's invincible.

Anyway, next time I get some time for AIW I'll take a look at why it's chasing, it shouldn't really be doing that (whether intended at the time or not, it's a bit much).

Surely the cookie monster's just stopping for some needed refuelling before moving on. :P

yeah I like the occasional chasing. Just keep an eye out on what planet it is at all times and you can easily avoid it. I sometimes have to wait a bit with making a move until the cookie monster is gone. Gives me an extra thrill everytime devourer is on my worlds.

Fair enough.  Maybe I can make it send an "Om Nom Nom!" chat message whenever it switches from "follow wormhole chain" to "grab a snack" :)

Yes please. A galaxy overlay displaying the location of the Devourer golem would be desired.

I know the nickname is cookie monster, but I've taken to calling the blasted thing "Lexx".  If you don't know the show, it ate ships and matter for food and destroyed worlds.
... and then we'll have cake.
