Silly request
« on: April 05, 2015, 10:42:05 am »
Hi guys, been a while since I posted here. I recently decided it would be lovely to get a copy of  pre-unity AI war working - I was aiming for one of the last version before the shield mechanic was replaced with the armor mechanic - AI War 3.189 would be the dream.

I have a 3.0 installer knocking around, but no installers for the expansions or updates (and the automatic updater obvs no longer works on these ridiculously legacy versions). I was wondering if anyone in the development team could spare the time to point me in the right direction to achieving this.

Why? I loved this version of AI war to death (the complexity added by the shield mechanic was intoxicating)  :)

thanks!

Please enlighten the noob I am: what is that Zenith-old feature (armor/shield? Wat?) and why do you prefer it? I'm very curious to learn more about the "dark ages" of this awesome game.
Please excuse my english: I'm not a native speaker. Don't hesitate to correct me.

Shields were the equivalent of armor now, except it worked on a non-deterministic system.  It was literally X% chance that a shot would miss.

For most units it worked OK, for some, it just dragged the fight out pointlessly (I remember fighting off some acid sprayers once, whatever ship I was using couldn't take damage from them, but only had a 5% chance to hit).

Shield was a % chance to block a shot

The % was a relationship between the strength of the shield, the max range of the weapon firing, and the current range to the target.

Eg. long range weapons were much more effective vs shields, short range weapons were often deflected. Rapid fire weapons were better against heavily shielded target as a percentage of shots would reliably get through.

This led to all sorts of relationships between units, and it meant battles were very dynamic - ships on FRD were always moving (usually one chasing another) in crazy patterns, and positioning really mattered (you could move a fleet close for mutually high damage battle or standoff at a distance where shots were less effective etc). Space tanks could only be harmed from absolutely point blank range, and Zenith Polarizers would turn heavily armored targets inside out with a single shot  :)

The armor mechanic was introduced (I think) because this level of complexity was difficult for most players to understand and it made an already complicated game.. even more complicated. The armor mechanic (which admittedly I think doesn't work as well) made battles comparatively simple and static.

There were lots of things I liked about the old version, and I generally like to re-visit old games

Thank you very much for taking time to explain this. I now understand both why it has been changed and why you're seeking to play it again.

I am pretty sure it was this Kahuna.

The shield mechanic, while interesting, was often much more annoying and frustrating than it was enjoyable. So it was replaced by a simpler, more enjoyable system.

I don't recall being frustrated or annoyed, just generally confused until I understood the mechanics behind it.

The GOG release has an early version along with a prototype as bonus items.
