Does this game need a lot more sound effects?
« on: November 06, 2012, 03:45:28 pm »
It's always "boom boom" everywhere. Or that squeak sound for anything vampirish or melee units. I'd like to hear ALL or at least most of the ships have different weapon fire sounds. This is my no.1 concern for this game at the moment. Since the graphics are quite simplistic the sounds are what make the atmosphere. The music is superb but SFX doesn't quite deliver it for me.

Oh, *different* sound effects.
A programmer had a problem. She thought to herself, "I know, I'll solve it with threads!". has Now problems. two she.

<Insert obligatory 'But theres no sound in space!' argument here>
:P

More sound effects could be neat, I guess.

I'd support this. I've long been disappointed with how similar the AI versus human sound effects are.

To that end, I've replaced a few of the more annoying effects with some I've generated with sfxr, and it's a long-standing project of mine to replace them all, but add a few extra stereo, echo, and layering effects with Audacity. But they'll still sound very bleepy bloopy.

But we're talking here about expanding the palette of sounds as well, which is beyond replacing some .wav files.

Just a crazy suggestion here, but one of the first games I played with some real frickin impact in the sound was the original Quake: the soundtrack designer was also the sound designer, so they were in charge of the entire game audio. Who was that? Nine Inch Nails.

Is Pablo Vega interested in doing some sound design?

While sound effects could use a bit of work, I don't think it is the number 1 issue that needs to be worked on. I think the UI (the dialogue design, the HUD design, keybindings, overall "intuitiveness") and figuring out what to do with armor, hull types, and multipliers, and then doing it* (and for that matter, nailing down what their role is supposed to be in the first place) are bigger priorities.

That said, I'm sure the devs are open towards sound contributions like they are graphics contributions. However, as mentioned, that can't get around engine limitations (like if you want two different actions to have different sound effects, but right now, the engine points at the same file. You can't get around that with simple file replacement)

*Please don't go off topic with this. There are other, much more relevant threads that go into this.
