I think I hit the hornet nest
« on: November 16, 2010, 04:43:54 pm »
I am playing on my X system map, about 10 hours in i think or close to it. I currently control 1 of 4 x formations of the map. while I just pushed into the center but now that I am in the center I am getting hit by waves pretty constantly it makes it hard for me to make any advancements. I find myself just sending in siege ships with a transporter into systems and breaking as much as I can.
My question is aside from counterattack post how many ways does the way have of getting around frontline planets? I am currently pooring all of my resources into turrets and other things inorder to hold the senter planet. as I use my fleet to push up one of the x's.
Are there any turretts I should try and research asap inorder to help hold down my grip on the center?

Other than counterattack posts, the AI has to slip past your center planet to get to the other planets.

My first suggestion would be to look around for a raid engine or similar if you're getting hit by frequent waves.  If wave frequency ever takes a massive jump upwards, that's something to look for.

Yeah, Raid engines are sometimes easy to miss if you are not scouting enough.

As for holding the Center:

Just as a word of council don't spend too much on turrets and/or defenses or you may run into a situation where you no longer have the offensive capability to continue advancing.

Depending on your circumstances you could do a number of things some of which you may have done already.

- Fortresses for their firepower and mobile repair
- Laser turrets which are good in general
- Flak turrets if you have loads of AI melee ships to deal with
- Higher mk tractor beams
- Heavy Beam Cannons if you have Hybrids around
- Grav turrets if you have lots of raiders or other tractor immune threats like Raid starships to deal with.

Lightning Turrets can be helpful in cutting down large waves but you'll want to  be careful since I believe z shredders will replicate when hit by them. (I remember it being considered and possibly implemented but I could be wrong.) Anyway that's just some very generic advice. Mine fields might also interest you, it all depends on what you want to do just be sure to look at your options.

One tactic to consider is putting a logistics station down on your friendly wormhole underneath a couple FFs, then just defending the station.

It makes the ships come to you, staggering them out due to the different move speeds and the turrets you build 'cover' all 3 wormholes because the ships all head for your command station.

This strategy does require a decloaker or other tachyon structure though, your turrets have to see the ships coming for it to work.

Thank you guys for the info.
Does the AI purposely attack you when you attack them? like when you leave your planet unguarded do they take note of this and attack you since you are gone?
I have tried expanding multiply times but every time it seems like they attack when I am the most spread out.

If you have Hybrid Hives in your game then I believe the answer is yes. I was playing an X map a few weeks ago and every time my fleet went done a side-path away from the "front" they'd dip in from either side that was open once I got a jump or two away.

Otherwise the answer is no. Some of the other AI activities are more reactive to things you do like Counter-attack waves you cause. Waves are timed/AIP dependent so that would be a coincidence. Border-Aggression, Scrap waves and CPA's would also be more of a coincidence as I don't think they care if you're "home" or not to receive them. And Special forces do their own thing and will show up when their patrol leads them there, (if it does).

Did you turn on one of the AI plots for Hybrid Hives for at least one of your AI's?

No i do not think I turned on hives or anything of that nature... probably just coincidence or it could be me not noticing ships slip through my attack waves... Have to pay more attention.
I have another question regarding Riot Ships, When are these useful? They seem to have weak attacks against most things, maybe I read it wrong?

GREAT Game by the way I got my friend to buy it as well and we have started a co-op session AMAZING.

Engine damage! It really helps take some of the impact out of larger waves when you can kite them and disable a large number of them before they hit your defenses.

They're also good support for glass cannon units if you equip them with tractor beams. Plus, the MK2's tazer is AMAZING.

Since enemy ships tend to take the most direct path to your harvesters and command station, I do exactly this, and line the path with as many turrets as I can cram in there.

Actually that engine damage saved me today when I activated a Counter Attack Post... ALl I had was some riot ships and a few others off the front line and due to that they messed up all of the engins and gave me time to scramble a response fleet. I love this game.

Yea, the Riots are a great example of units that don't do anything like big-dps, but nonetheless are absurdly useful :)

Is it worth getting the next levels of Riot ships? How much better are they?

Mk2s have the tazer, which if properly used can seriously drop the dps of an almost arbitrarily large (but close-together) group of enemies.

Mk3s don't have anything terribly special, but their advanced modules can do a simply horrendous amount of engine damage :)  Basically if you need more Riots, that's how you get them.
