Well, I'm not sure how much of the really threatening ships in an event attack are actually not immune to paralysis, but you could find out ;)

Certainly having more Riots along really helps in rolling-retreat engagements like you'll probably be fighting when the bigger event waves come in, as ships that are engine-dead or even just really engine-slow are often as good as out of the main battle.

They are very survivable; mk1 sheilds run 500k hp, and are rebuilt in 9 seconds ;)

I usually run mk3s with shields and shotguns, giving them significantly more engine damage.

Of random note, I tend to lose riots more often when I run out of resources >.>
they arnt expensive to maintain, but they need resources

Keith engine damage is not that useful for defense against spire waves. Smaller ships simply fly with 0% engines because that fleets seem to be using the hybrids logic. So you need to first de-engine one of larger ships... and have to guess which one of them is the fleet lead. Only after it dies others actually  notice their engine damage. This makes riots pretty uneffective at stopping that attacks. Especially that they will target anything from the wave (same with spiders) - there is no info or targeting preference for the lead ship.

Ah, right, thanks for reminding me about the engine-damage-ignored thing.  They are indeed using the hybrid's logic to keep the group together, though they're already doing something a bit different so that the coordinate-ee's show up in the threat count, and I could just have it use that same flag to disable the engine-damage-ignoring behavior.  For the hybrids it's really part of the idea that they hold their group together through that, but for these it's just a convenience to avoid having to pick similar-speed ships, etc.

I have question from a bit different ground:

Dyson sphere - should it be active from what I think would be the start of game (or maybe from when I scouted it?) and it would do two things:
- emits dysons that die quickly (yes even with 3.6m hp they die on that planet in very short time - fortresses simply waste dysons - Mk III + Mk I one attacking from afar is untouchable)
- cause planet with dyson and planets next to it to reinforce to gargantuan numbers (700+ currently on low ship caps) - this causes constant stream of attacking ships in large groups from quite higher mark than my tech (mark of planets around the dyson mostly)

PS.

Not sure why I thought that spire cities can be placed every other world (one world of spacing).. it seems that they can be placed only every 3rd world -this means you got to capture ton of planets to be able to place 5 of these.
