I miss the stronger vs and weaker vs display
« on: October 29, 2010, 02:08:48 am »
I can appreciate the merit of simplifying and streamlining the strong against/weak against mechanics, that makes all kinds of sense to me, but my problem is that when I'm actually playing the game the result of the way the new system is presented is that I don't know what's strong against what. In the past if I wanted to find a ship  that was strong against another ship type, all I had to do was look at the stronger/weaker vs. info. If I want to do the same thing now, I have to find one of the problem ships, determine its hull type, then go find a ship that's strong against that hull type. This is considerably more involved than the old mechanism, and the overall result is that I feel like I've totally, hopelessly lost track of what's good against what. I'm sure that I'll eventually be able to remember the hull types on the triangle ships, but with the sheer volume of bonus ships (and more being added all the time, bless you) I can't see the issue going away with experience.

I'm not sure what the best solution is, unfortunately, but I certainly miss the days when I could just glance at a ship's rollover text to see what I needed to have to kill it.

It is more involved, initially. But after a while you'll have a general idea on what does more damage against what, and in case something is forgotten, there's always the reference sheet.

I personally feel this new system is less confusing and easier to commit to memory.

Take a look at reference tab in stats. It's currently still under development (I think?) and gets improved still but it provides some strong vs weak data.

I think the most significant point on this is that as much as many players relied on the strong/weak data previously, it actually didn't give an accurate account of the best counters. So even without commenting on the new system at all, it must be better to get no information than inaccurate information.

All that's been removed there is the illusion of intelligence data which made everyone feel a bit safer but actually was blinkering us to proper tactical decision making.

That said, the new system is actually very easy to wrap one's head around with only a little practice - and you know now that what you find out is actually true, which is a big improvement.

Nonetheless, it might be worthwhile thinking about implementing a hotkey feature that allows the selection of one ship and the holding of a key to see ships possessing a hull type against which the selected ship has a bonus.

I want to be clear that I'm not so much criticizing the new system as I am having real problems with the way information about the new system is presented. In the past, if I wanted to find a counter to a ship, all I had to do was look at the rollover text for said ship. Where do I go for that now? 5 clicks and a ton of scrolling and searching on the reference tab for less clearly presented information? That's... very much the opposite of an improvement. I appreciate that data being there, but it's not formatted in such a way that I want to have to be using it in the middle of a fight or indeed very often at all.

Something like that would completely resolve my issue with this. I just want a fast way to be able to tell what's good against what again.

If you select your group of ships and alt click on your targets there is a 'view reference' option on that menu. It opens up the reference screen filtered to the relevant ship types. Try it out.

Ah, that might help. Thanks! :)

the current system requires me too look up the target's hull type.. its really only a problem while I dont know all of them yet :p

the old system required me to know the shipcap of the other one..

I agree that it's confusing. I've looked at the reference information and it makes very little sense to my addled brain!
A simple, visual indication that would would indicate if the selected unit was Good, Medium or Poor against another ship type would help enormously,
(perhaps changing the cursor on mouse-over to Green, Yellow or Red) without interrupting the flow of the game.

Not really. I'm not looking for a detailed mathematical understanding here, after all, just a general sense of what's good against what. :)

well thats just it - the shipcap meant a LOT.. nowadays I have to check hp/hulltype/unitcap to get the same general idea.

Personally I'm a huge fan of the new system. I find it involves a lot less micro as far as fleet composition goes.

Maybe I didn't know what I thought I knew, then. I know I don't know much of anything now, though. Neither situation is ideal.  ;D

I'm talking about the way information is displayed, not the underlying mechanics. I agree that the new mechanics are vastly better, I just miss having a (possibly erroneous :)) notion of what was good against what.
