I keep losing track of my ships
« on: August 04, 2010, 06:14:30 pm »
I'm in the late game of my first game and am having a devil of a time keeping track of where ships are being built and sent to. I've looked over the interface (which is largely brilliant, by the way) but I can't seem to find a tool that will tell me how many total mobile military ships are in a given system on the galaxy map (as opposed to individual ship type counts, which can be misleading for this purpose). Am I missing something? I'm quite certain I shouldn't be "misplacing" 2000 ship fleets like this...

Yeah, that can be a problem sometimes....just make them into control groups - left CTRL + 1 ; CTRL +2 and so on.
I place my control groups in the manner: ctrl grp 1 - fighters , grp 2 - bombers ,etc.

Are you perhaps looking for the "q" filter option for the galaxy map? That displays a total count of all mobile military units in each system. There's a number of these types of filters, available through shortcut keys or a button on the left-hand side of the galaxy map (I don't have the game available at the moment, so I don't recall precisely which button it is).

That's EXACTLY what I was looking for, thank you! I'm familiar with the filter list via the magnifying glass tool on the left, but couldn't find a way to get it to show me all mobile military rather than counts of specific ship types (bombers mark III or what have you). "Q" does the job, though,

No problem, glad that worked for you! The button I was referring to is the display modes button, located two below the magnifying glass tool. It will let you pick from a number of secondary counts for all planets on the galaxy map, including the "My Ships" filter I mentioned previously. There's actually several views on that list that are hugely useful, so I'd definitely suggest checking them out.

Yeah, I found that one (and realized it was what you were talking about) shortly after I started playing with "q." It's a brilliant UI, really, it just takes awhile to figure out where everything is. Thanks again! :)

Many thanks for the kind words on the interface -- there's definitely a lot there, though.  There are actually some filters on the left side right under the place where you can filter to Your Ships (Q) or Allied Ships (A) or Team Ships (T) and similar.  I think it's Shift+Q, but you can see it on the left.  It would either say All or Mil there.  If you make it Mil, that's usually the most helpful setting, I find.  Then it's literally just mobile military ships, and ignores all economic ships and so forth.  Less clutter that way.

There are some other uber-helpful filters in that first list, too, such as Knowledge Gathered (K) and Scouts (O) and a few others.

Especially the (K) filter is useful. I find myself using it less since the advent of autogathering...

But the UI design is indeed very good. It just needs more work to get into than a standerd Strategy UI.

Yeah, I'd already stumbled across K, W, S, and a number of others. I'd just missed "Q" which is unfortunate as it's the one I needed most. Now I just play with that on by default, and switch to the others as needed. It seems to be working great, and I don't lose fleets anymore. Thanks again everyone!

That's what I do, too.
