Actually, saves are forwards compatible
And Chris fairly regularly tests with games from the alpha phase before the game was even publicly released
If you go waaaay back you can get some seriously changed values, like from before the economy was flow based, and your energy balance might be a lot different... but the games will still be completely playable.
