Just commented in the other thread, but that is seriously awesome!  It's always the most meaningful when the really discerning folks are the ones giving a game glowing reviews. So that's just too cool for words. :)

Since that's a first impressions series, and the first thing a new player does when getting AI War is to spend over 5 hours playing the tutorial, that would be kind of hard to do. Even if he skipped the tutorial and showed a game, it still wouldn't really fit his format. Even the biggest WTF is videos have been about 1 1/2 hours. If he did that with AI War he'd be just about up to 3 or 4 systems if he rushed, and barely even scratching the beginning of the game.

It's just not a game that lends itself well to quick impressions. It's like a fine brandy, you have to savor it slowly, not just gulp it down.

Haha, really cool notice--I'm glad he mentioned it in his video for his legion of followers; although, apparently I missed it myself.  :p
I'd take a sea worm any time over a hundred emotionless spinning carriers.

I was going to say, I've only ever seen videos of his that are 30-60 minutes, which doesn't even get you half way through the demo :P

That game he's playing, Fate of the World, I hadn't seen it before. However hard it is, it is a freaking gorgeous design.

It is quite hard. Even when you think you've done everything you could possibly do right, you will probably still fail and make pandas extinct somehow. I get the feeling that part of that is intentional. It's a semi-realistic simulation of what the next 50-100 years or so could be like for the planet, with a heavy emphasis on environmental/social catastrophe. The message is basically that saving the world is hard, or maybe impossible. Kind of a depressing game, to be honest. But I'm still glad I bought it.

To be fair, as cute as they are, pandas are kind of too dumb to live and an evolutionary failure.  They're carnivores in everything but diet, which is why they have to spend all their time and energy eating stuff that they don't have the digestive tract to effectively/efficiently get nutrients out of.  Their borderline nonexistant reproductive rate hasn't done them any favors, either.  If we didn't kill them off, either they'd do it themselves or something else that's actually competent at surviving would out compete them.

Short version, having them die out in the game is pretty accurate.  Heh.

I've never seen that view of it, but it does seem surprisingly insightful and accurate.  The problem is that we've caused some species to go extinct that wouldn't have, and so now we see ourselves as conservators of all species: "no more natural selection!  Every species that now exists must continue to exist forever because if they cease to exist it's possible it might have been because of us!"

And, really, that sentiment is pretty true, too.  It's possible that we affected pandas in some fundamental ways without realizing it: maybe we affected their dietary patterns before we tracked that sort of thing; maybe our pollution or development caused some of the reproductive issues.  So if we let them die, it's possible that might be on our heads.

In the end it mostly doesn't cost us as a species that much to keep pandas alive, and I think that as a species we have a special love of biodiversity, and there are plenty of people who feel really strongly that pandas are worth preserving.  So, in the end, I can't argue with that.  I'm certainly not in favor of endangering species or causing them to go extinct.  And if others want to preserve species that would have headed to extinction on their own, that's certainly not something I can object to, either.  And pandas are cute.

All that said: I agree with your quote. ;)

There is one problem.  We spend a lot of money trying to keep them alive that could go toward helping other species that are equally endangered that have a better chance of surviving.  The reason we don't is that they don't look like giant teddy bears.  If we could somehow save all of them, that would be great, but it kind of sucks when we prioritize the ones that are likely to fail anyway over the ones who actually have a pretty good shot just because they're cuddly, but there's not really as much appeal to the general public in saving some kind of ugly thing they've never heard of, whether it's a lizard or a fish or one of the less "fun" mammals.  So it goes.

If we're going to be preserving any other species, I assume it's out of either self-interest or guilt.  In the case of anything going extinct, the second kicks in but it's a less powerful force.  In the case of pandas, they tickle our fancy so the former kicks in in a major way.  I'm not saying it's right or rational, but still.

Yeah, I know.  I get why stuff works that way, on an intellectual level, at least, and I don't expect everything to be completely rational, but sometimes I wish it were at least a little bit more so.  Oh well.

I bet the AI wouldn't save the pandas, but it's kind of a jerk like that.  And now this topic has completed the great circle of life.  Heh.
