I think we need to look at why we're doing this. Is this for promotional purposes, or is it for our own use/enjoyment?
If it's the former, I think the most productive thing would be to showcase the various "cool things" that are generated on planets. Show a planet with a destroyed golem in the planetary view, F-Fwd through repairing (note the AI progress increase, which the trailer doesn't show), show it in action in a zoomed-out view - I mean like serious action, like send an Armored Golem up against a good 300-400 ships it can kill in 1-3 shots. Show a large group of ships entering an enemy planet next to a Mark IV raid engine planet, so you get that "incoming wave" notification, zoom in a bit and circle it, when back to planetary view and select the other planet and go to the badass-looking Raid Engine with a big obvious countdown. Show astrotrains wrecking a player's wormhole defenses. Pop a Zenith Reserve, show a Devourer Golem eating an entire fleet. What really surprised me upon buying the full game is how important these things really are to the layout of the system, what planets are actually taken, and how you approach those planets. I also didn't even know most of them existed - I had to look up what Astrotrains did after being dumbfounded by their "pretty much unkillable" tooltip, and I had no idea what a Raid Engine was, or what Golems really did. No video I saw was like "look, here's some cool shit you're going to run across in the galaxy every single time you play." And generally speaking, try to keep it fairly zoomed out because I feel that zooming in too far is completely unrealistic compared to what most players will be seeing
.
There are plenty of battle videos, introducing the ships makes little sense if you haven't played the game (although it's nice for showing more complexity), the trailers already do a half-decent job of showcasing the AI.
Now, if it's the latter, I'd vouch heavily for a video that introduces the kinds of ships, but I would like it to spend around a minute on each one. "Ship: stats" (show the icon and maybe how it looks really zoomed in). And then say/display what it's good and bad against and what you should be using it for, while showing footage of the ship in action in the background. Like the footage for Space Planes and other cloaked ships would mainly involve raids or sneak attacks (while the one for Raiders can also show them owning everything, lol) while the one for Sentinel Beam Frigates would show them in a variety of defensive and offensive support situations. I think very few players know all about the different bonus ships (and fabricator ships, and probably starships while we're at it) and what they can really do, and what they're really good at. I know that, personally, I tend to jump for Space Planes and Tanks whenever I get the option, and I think ships like Tachyon Microfighters and the Autocannon Minipods are crap...but I haven't played with them to see if they really are that bad. It's nice to see a video that shows me exactly where they can be useful, especially if I get them as an ARS ship and feel like ignoring them because I think they're useless when they really could be helping my cause a lot.
