Help with selecting a new game
« on: October 18, 2009, 03:49:32 am »
I'm kinda fed up. This seems to be a great game, but i can't quite find the right game settings to "get into" it. Any suggestions?

What sorts of settings have you tried? Do you have any idea what you're looking for? A little bit of background could go a long way in offering suggestions for what you could try.

In terms of AI types, I'm a fan of mad bombers, since their waves can be really difficult to deal with, especially as they bring in more bomber starships. I typically play on AI level 8, but perhaps something lower that's at least 7 would be more your style; if that is too difficult, you could try giving the AI a penalty so they'll produce fewer ships while still displaying the interesting tactics available on levels 7 and up. I enjoy starting with multiple homeworlds; the ship caps can get pretty interesting with a lot of homeworlds, and defense can be quite the undertaking. It can emphasize the turn-based aspect of the game, driving the player to pause and lay out defenses because there's just so much to manage.

I like to turn off astro trains, since I find them to be a bit of a nuisance, and I like big maps (around 80) so there are a lot of places to scout and a lot of interesting decisions to be made. Having a lot of planets available gives you a lot of options for where to expand and what worlds give you the most knowledge for the lowest AI progress.

If you're finding the game uninteresting in terms of defending your world, you could try one of the hubs settings, which can yield worlds with tons of wormholes. Having so many wormholes means defending even one planet can be quite a task, since you only have so many ships and turrets available earlier in the game. You could also play with a higher AI progress per x minutes penalty, to push you to play faster or have larger incoming waves.

Kalzarius has been playing with a completionist attitude, trying to take every planet, which is quite an undertaking because the AI becomes more and more difficult with every world you get. darke has been playing games that really challenge him, facing off against very high level AIs or playing with 8 homeworlds, where there's a lot to manage. The multiple homeworld thing is especially interesting because losing even one means the game is over.

Perhaps some of that is helpful, but as the game has a ton of settings, it's hard to recommend something without knowing more about what hasn't worked for you and what sorts of things you might be interested in. Sorry to hear you're not having enough of an enjoyable time. :(

I'm not too good at multitasking; i like slapping down some defenses then going out on "crusades" to attack an enemy, though i think if i opted for a totally defensive game that would be interesting. Dropping a high-level ai on a small planet set (with a couple of "give me k" cheats to get enough knowledge to survive a while) sounds kind of interesting just to see how i can hold out though other suggestions would be nice.

My main gripe right now is it seems like just a big grind getting anywhere; scout some, clear out a few planets, rinse and repeat. Something that could help fix that as well is welcome.

I've tried probably most of the ship types as well as large and small maps i'd say. I started with AI 5s, but AIs seem to do more harassing and are overall tougher on 7. I was honestly afraid of trying anything but an "easy" Ai personality though, they sounded a little too hard!

Haha, here's one thing you could try (warning, will lag IMMENSELY).

Basically do a 10 planet map, then keep searching until you get the 2 enemy homeworlds (non-starting planets) adjectent to each other, and only one wormhole into the starting planets. Then select every starting planet. It's you with 8 planets (all homeworlds) vs the 2 AI homeworlds. Make them 7+ and both homeworlders. Then try to win. :D

I would point out that the purpose of multitasking here is not to make you juggle (who wants that), but rather to give you a variety of things to do at any given time.  I prefer to send out scouts on paths I set, and then just ignore them until I think of them 10 or 20 minutes later and check to see what they have discovered, for instance.  And for defenses I mostly try to set it up so that those are also automated, except when sizable waves come.  So then my attention is spent on the offensive raids, and dealing with the larger incoming AI waves, with a smattering of other quicker tasks (scouting, defenses/econ rebuilding, build queue adjustments) as needed.  Generally I wouldn't expect that to be too overwhelming, but I guess it depends what you're looking for.

The more you set those activities end-to-end, however, or the more you structure it so that you're only having to worry about offense because the rest of the game is easy because of cheats, settings, the scenario, whatever, the more it is going to be a grind.  In other words, this is a game that is about a whole bunch of different things other than just offensive raiding.  What you seem to be saying is that you just want to focus on offensive raiding, but then it gets repetitive because all you're doing is offensive raiding. ;)

I'm not trying to criticize here, I'm just trying to illustrate the way that the game is balanced, or why most people don't find it too grindy unless they play it with very specific settings.  For instance, AI 10 is pretty much always a grind.

For the AI types, I'd suggest playing Random Easier/Moderate, since that gives a pretty good mix. The Harder ones can be quite difficult, and I don't play with those much, myself.

Really, the core of this game boils down to this:  finding yourself pinched in some way, with some challenge that is not easy to solve, and then solving it.  That could be on a logistical, strategic, or tactical level.  Often it involves finding enough knoweldge, or finding a target to strike, or deciding how best to achieve your economic goals, or whatever.  There are a hundred little challenges like that.  If you play on a difficulty level that is too easy for you, though, then that all fades away.  You're never challenged, so it starts feeling like you are just grinding ever outwards.

Decisions are only interesting if they come at an opportunity cost -- if everything is so easy for you that you can just slam through one world after the next and rebuild in between, with no thought of repercussions, then your decision space shrinks and the game becomes way less interesting.  Playing at a difficulty level that challenges you will indeed extend the length of games, but rather than making it a longer grind that will generally (AI 10 and such excepted) instead just set you up with an increasing slate of interesting decisions.  To me, it sounds like you aren't being challenged in short, and I think that's part of the crux of your problem.

On a related note, if you're just slamming through all the planets without much regard for what they are, then not only does that likely mean you're playing on too easy a difficulty for yourself at present, it means that you'll have a really hard time on higher difficulties.  Haagenti and Eraser have made an art (in two different ways) out of keeping their territory small and doing longer-range raiding to just take a few enemy planets and to try to win the game in a very strategic, very non-grindy way.  You might also enjoy playing a style like that, and it would also enable you to more easily handle a higher difficulty.  Given your desire for detailed management of a "crusade" against the AI, I think this would also match your interests well.

One thing that i've noticed is the GIANT gap inbetween 7.6 and 8.  I used to play around 7, 7.3, sometimes 7.6 and decided to up the difficulty to 8.  If you're having a really hard time, try lowing the difficulty a notch or two.

When playing single player, single homeworld with AI 8, i've found that i spend most of my time defending against very large waves, and I have a very difficult time capturing new planets.  The reinforcement and wave sizes in 8 make the game much more difficult than 7.6 (for me anyways)

Often, i'd get frustrated when after 2-3 hours i would only be able to destroy one planet, and still be starving for resources to maintain any sort of fleet.  Hopping back down to 7.6 made the game much more enjoyable (along with some of the most recent bugfixes in the latest pre-releases).

With more players, the difficulty seems to be slightly easier (more planets to receive reinforcements, more people to absorb waves and help you out, more starting resources in general, ability to trade harvesters to balance out your production (although recently we've both been getting the same excess resource)).

First of all, thanks guys for taking the time out to help me. It's much appreciated!

I'll then definitely up difficulty then to something between 7 and 8.

Just started a new game with 2 7.6s and i gotta say its a lot more fun. Certainly exciting when a bomber starship and about 50 bombers escape your defenses! I didn't expect a wave of 400 ships right off the bat... I actually had to reload my save so i could prepare properly! :)
