Heavy Lift Transport mode (move that Dreadnaught)
« on: April 14, 2010, 06:47:16 pm »
I would love to see a "heavy lift" transport capability for Starships like the dread -

I would expect:
one Starship per transport
no unloading except in friendly systems.
the cargo Starship itself or its engines destroyed if the "heavy lift mode" transport is scrapped or destroyed.

I think starships badly need some sort of transport to get them by masses of wormholes defenses on the other side.

Fleet ships get such protection, yet starships do not, what a shame.

Ironically it seems like fleet ships are the star ships protection but when they are in transports to evade big defenses they certainly aren't helping the poor starships who are lagging.

It seems a shame if you happen to have built a starship on your side of the galaxy then realize you can't get it past a crust, you essentially have to scrap it and build another one on the other side with your transports that slip by the crust.  :-[

Starships might be a viable way to play if they could get by crusts without stacking EMPs. (which doesn't even work all the time if they have cores or other emp absorption units).

I dont agree with this, stacking a 7k hp flagship inside a 4k transport sounds stupid. bar perma-mines, if a transport can get through, a flagship can get through. dreadnoughts are artillery, not deep raiders

big things are sometimes built in one place, then broken into bits and transported somewhere else then put back together, so to simulate this....

placing starship inside heavy transport paralyses transport for an amount of time, and redeployment again paralyses the transport before it's let out. this process could either use up some resources or dismantle the transport to rebuild, a one shot deal so to speak. if the transport is destroyed the cargo is lost.

they would then be useful for redeployment, but not so good for raiding.

Considering transports have much more health and are much faster than any of the starships and can't take engine damage, actually if a transport can get through it usually means a flagship can't. Flagships also usually take extra damage from something whereas I don't think transports do.

Not to mention that transports are significantly faster than everything else (save Raid Starships and projectiles).

My main idea on this is getting slower starships to a closer friendly planet faster. Dreads are sooo sloooowwww I dont even unlock them most of the time.

That is why "heavy lift mode" transports can unload only at a friendly planet (no raiding)
And if the transport is destroyed or scrapped the Starship as cargo is lost (again no raiding)
