Group selection
« on: December 28, 2009, 10:15:33 am »
Hi, new to the forums, and new to the game, and thus, n00b questions arise ;)

I was just wondering if it was possible to select a group in another system without zooming to them.

Would make it easy to just push '1' for group 1, and then click where I want it to go instead of having to move them to a wormhole and wait for them to get there before I can move them further, when there are other things I need to do as well :)

Particularly useful for getting engineers to me quickly, particularly the T2's and up, as they move so fast ;)

Ctrl + 1 (or 2, or 3, or 4...) is your friend!  ;D

Also, keep in mind that what you have selected on one planet will stay selected when you move your view to a different planet, you can give movement orders from the galaxy map, and you can give chains of orders if you hold down shift.

Check out the ingame shortcut keys reference, or the printable one you can find here for all your awesome shortcuts  ;)

Good luck with your war!

Indeed, making groups is indeed useful, not sure I could play these kinds of games without it :)

I tend to express myself poorly though, and it seems I've done it again here unfortunately :(

My question was more along the lines of, if I push '1' to select a group at a different planet, the camera moves to view this selected group, and I was wondering how I could select a group at a different planet without the camera moving there.
If the group is at the same planet, I have to push '1' twice, which is very nice (assuming it's group 1 of course), but it would be nice if that was possible for groups at different planets too.

Welcome to the forums dude 8)

And sorry, but I'm almost positive it's not.

I think I asked this question a long (long) time ago, but I don't quite remember that answer X gave me...

Short answer is no, there isn't a way to do this. You can work around it, though, if you pause the game, then give your orders, then unpause. I normally only do this in time sensitive situations though...

you can select and move groups via the galaxy map, perhaps that will be useful?

To move to a control group on another planet, you can triple-press the control group of the other planet.  But, you can only give orders to ships that are on the current planet that you are on; to give orders to ships on another planet requires switching to that planet.  The single exception to that is with the Find interface in the galaxy map, which lets you issue orders to ships of a certain type from many/all planets and send them to a single gather planet.
