Not sure if I want to get this game...
« on: October 27, 2009, 11:19:34 am »
Well, I liked what I saw on steam so I downloaded the demo.

I rather liked the demo, and think co-op would be a blast.

But why do I hesitate?  I'm a college student, with little free time (and 17 hr games sounds rather daunting, even if spread out over multiple sessions)

But I guess my real question is that I don't have any friends who are interested in this, and I'd hate to buy this game only to be unable to find any sort of 'pick' up games.

So, the best times for me are pretty much Friday night & some of Saturday; does anyone here match up?

The game is also a blast when played non-co=op (i.e. just you versus computer). And that for $15 it is hard to go wrong.

BTW: apparently college has changed since I was in college: the term "college student with little free time" sounds completely alien to my ears  :)

I remember using the term "college student with no time" to my folks, but yeah, I had plenty of time to game in undergrad :).

I'd also post on the meeting grounds forum to see if there are any takers.

And you may want to post your time zone as well.

Ugh, are you kidding me? My school has one of those silly quarter systems, and the Professors all seem to forget that each "Semester" is really only 10 weeks. So the first few weeks are dull and I've more free time than I know what to do with, but come the latter half of the quarter, and I'm so busy I can barely do everything.

When I was in college, I took 12 hours of courses per semester, and "officially" worked 34 hour weeks as an IT sysadmin and later as a programmer, where "officially 34 hours" meant really more like 40-45 hours.  I would have had quite a bit of free time, I suspect, had I not been burning it at both ends.  It was worth it in the end, for me personally, but man that was a busy time.  Not like last week, but still very busy.

I'm in a slightly unusual position doing my degree with the OU that I have absolutely no classes to attend whatsoever and all my studying is self directed; though I still have regular assignments and exams. I actually secured a place at a fairly prestigious (I suppose equivalent to the US Ivy league) university, but turned it down for financial reasons. For some bizarre reason, I'd end up 30k in debt completing a degree at a traditional bricks and mortar uni, but can get a grant to study at home. Go figure.

I work pretty well under my own motivation, so I'm quite happy with my current situation. Had I followed my original plans, I'd have never found Arcen! What a shame that would have been.

I had my first job doing part time work as an admin/tech support for a hospital. I'd get calls from consultants complaining that some machine wasn't correctly transmitting pictures of patient X's colon to their computer, so I'd offer to kindly fix it for them on the condition that they show me which pieces of the machine had NOT been inside someone. I have actually been inside a theatre, working on a PC, with a doctor performing a procedure on a patient 2 metres away. Very weird.

As Haagenti pointed out, this game is amazing even single player mode. Plus if you have a friend or two who are interested you can always have a different game going for each friend/pair of friends and one going solo so you can play whatever game is most available.

If its going to be a bit of a pause between gaming sessions i suggest wholesale abuse of the notes system in the galaxy map ;) (use / to go into note mode or click the button over on the left) I find notes a GREAT way to remember your plans between gaming sessions and to go into details about your plans for a specific planet and important tactical information, like the drive-through lady is particularly rude at the command station which tends to lower your troop's moral or how the special ops base commander really needs to lose the mustache causing your men to point and laugh instead of opening fire ;D You can of course also mention silly stuff like how it'd be ideal to take for its large amount of resources, ion cannon, and position as a bottle-neck planet only having 1 or 2 hostile wormhole(s) after capture but most people don't like such silliness written in the notes  ::) :P

Seriously though, the game isn't meant to be done in 1 or even necessarily 2 gaming sessions (my first AI 6 game has spanned 4 loads so far each time I've only played for 1 to 3 hours tops before having to save and go do something else, was going to play tonight but got reading the forums instead lol ;D)

So while the overall campaign takes a monstrous amount of time, you can also play it like a casual short-term-goals type game by making notes on the planets of what you want to accomplish then each gaming session try to achieve one of those goals even if its something as simple as a gate raid (you'd be surprised how difficult gate raids can be against certain AI types). In fact in my limited experience the game is best played with this sort of mind set focusing on one short term goal after another all which get you closer to the ultimate goal of destroying the AI Cores.

That's one of the magical things about AI War, for all its depth and massive scale, it really leaves a lot to the individual player's individual unique style and due to its hot-join/leave support even their time constraints for multi-session coop games all without leaving you feeling lost or (totally) overwhelmed :) (unless your playing vs 2 level 10 AI, then feeling overwhelmed is by design ;))

PS: College is overrated, drop 150 grand on an education you coulda gotten for $1.50 in late fees at the public library.................and yes, that's from Good Will Hunting, and yes that is an absolutely amazing movie ;D and no I'm not actually saying college is bad, I've just been wanting a good chance to use that line since i saw that movie ;) and its wayyyy too early/late in the morning to be posting on forums cuz i get stupidly rambly then so... *post*

Very cool.  In the end, I wound up leaving my bricks-and-mortar university (where I was studying computer science), and got my degree long-distance in Business Administration, with a specialization in Management.  I don't regret that one bit, and it especially continued to let me get the work experience that was so valuable for me.  So I can definitely appreciate where you're coming from with most of that -- though working on tech support in an operating theatre is pretty crazy!  Sounds like a great setup, though.

Glad you're enjoying it so much!  I would also suggest the Manage Players option if you have a group of friends that are not always present:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PHl0_h0pUGw&feature=player_embedded

Yes, I have some serious love for that movie, as well. :)
