Golems in AIW Unity?
« on: October 25, 2010, 01:03:54 am »
From my prior experience in the SlimDX version of AI War, almost every golem that dealt self-damage was by far underwhelming and ineffective/inefficient.  Has anyone had much trial with them in the Unity port, and are there any plans to balance them all to be useful, or are players going to be burdened with the repair and suicide of the garbage tier golems in order to evade the wave/counterwave amplification?

or, you could just build them, turn them off and send them to some random system in the back?

I'd like to see some change to them to make them a little more useful!

the botnet golem at least is very useful if used correctly (correct use = pop in, convert large number of MK IV ships to your own, pop out, send whole fleet in, win very easily)

Don't the golems now not incur AI Progress?
It's just carriers all the way down!

My experience with the botnet golem from my solo game in SlimDX was terrible--it drained way more of the economy than in comparison in maintaining my main fleet, along with ten thousand mercenary fighters.  Cursed golems the same (these were worse, and the game decided to throw in three seeds of these), and again, anything that requires constant repair wasn't worth it, and if I decided I wanted to just suicide my fleet in and take a few thousand casualties, I think that would have been better than using a golem.

My best experience was probably with widows--they didn't self-damage.  :\

The repair costs on golems (post awakening) are just god-awful.

I haven't seen them in the unity beta yet, but several did just get their self-damage removed.

Quote
    * The artillery golem no longer self-damages as it attacks. It has vastly less health, though, and now only fires half as often.

    * The armored golem is no longer self-damaging as it attacks, but also has vastly less health -- but vastly more armor.

    * The botnet golem is no longer self-damaging, but now has a lot less health and far lowered move speed.
