Game without cloaking ships
« on: January 22, 2011, 02:48:33 am »
Is it intentional that I can't use scouts and thus can't scout when cloaking ships are disabled?

Oh, I take that back. I still have the two initial mk 2 scouts, and I can build scout starships, just not the fleet ships.

WhyTF can you build cloaked scout starships when cloaking is turned off?  :o

IMO you should be able to build scouts just fine even with cloaked ships disabled... since they're a pretty important part of the game...

I wonder I wonder...does this game need none-cloaked scouting units?

Scout Starships are counted as "Starships" in the ship options rather then cloaked ships. So you can use them for scouting if nothing else with cloaking off. :)

Though I agree with you hullu, it seems like scouts shouldn't be counted under the cloaking ship options since they don't have an attack and are fairly essential to how the game is played.

Leave the scouts, take away the cloaking. It's not like it would make much of a difference in they way they play anyway, since there are tach guardians on every single wormhole. I had a game where the wormholes had been moved around by the random number change in a patch, so that the tach guardians were actually just at random spots in the system instead of right on the wormhole. Made one scout last a lot longer, but it took a lot more micro since you have to make sure you dodge the range of any guardians that might be in-between one wormhole and the next.

I still think there ought to just be a non-cloaked, heavily armoured scouting unit. Fast or slow, armed or not, just something with scouting capabilities that uses something other than cloaking to get by.

Don't some higher level starships provide scouting, or was that just warp detection? I can't remember off-hand.

That must be either the zenith or the spire Ss. Or the SSs  ;)

Either way, that's pretty big guns to bring for scouting, imo.

I was just saying that heavily armored units with scouting may already exist. I never said that the current ones are practical. :D

Even with tachyon guardians at every wormhole, cloaking is required if you want to send scouts and then *leave* them there so you can see what is going on in the sector. It's highly unlikely something strong enough to do that without cloaking is going to be added. :)

Well, there'd be cloaker starships you could send along.

Edit: Unless you turn cloaking off, that is. In that case, you can still set up a few force fields with some engineers below, then place your non-cloaking scout in there. Voila, intel sans cloaking!

I think a ship with range 1000 radar damping would be the ideal 'non-cloaking' scout.. then again, its also probably borderline overpowered, because 1000 range radar damping pretty much means invulnerable.

Fast, high radar dampening, no weapons. Probably would still have to cloak in some way though, otherwise the AI isn't just going to let it sit on the border of its planet perpetually if you wanted to leave it for long term intel.
