Why does the Spirecraft Ram fly/attack with the blunt end forward?

Why is the Spire Super Dreadnought shaped like a moth?

I always thought some AI structures and guard posts looked really abstract and strange. I honestly could not spot the gun (or the entrance, or the sensible anything) on those structures. The AI's units are pretty much the definition of strange.
But damn those Dire Guardian Lairs are sexy.

I really like the art of the AI "race" units. They look sort of like what genetic algorithms produce. Effective, but very, very ugly. (And spikey, genetic algorithms seem to love spikes for some reason). That seems like the sort of "design process" the AI would take for making new hulls for new unit types.

This is how I created the ones you're thinking of: http://www.groboto.com

For the spirecraft, I modeled those mostly in ZBrush using... I forget what it is called now.  The thing where you model up by using your pen tablet and drawing lines of spheres that form a skeleton for a larger shape.
