How do I pick the vessel when I hack?
« on: May 26, 2014, 09:37:47 am »
I tried to hack an Advanced Research Station. I built the Scientific vessel that's used for hacking, moved it to that planet with the help of a cloaking starship. The hacking vessel got damaged but survived and I moved it out of reach. So it started hacking, while being cloaked.

After 10 minutes, it had completed it's hacking. I could click the Hacking vessel, find the ARF tab, but the buttons were greyed out and I did not find a way to 'steal a vessel blueprint' so to say.

Didn't have much time to figure it out, as suddenly I noticed a MKIII Raid starship nibbling at my home base, obliterating me within a moments notice. So I wonder, what did I miss when I tried to hack the Advanced Research Station?

You now have to capture the system as normal and use the ARS tab of the advanced research station.

Note: the left-most choice is what you would have gotten if you hadn't hacked it.  So choose wisely.

You actually don't have to use the advanced research station.  ANY lab brought to the planet will have an ARS tab that you can use to select your bonus ship.

Also: If you bring a lab to an ARS planet BEFORE hacking it, you can use the ARS tab to see what blueprints the station has and whether it is worth hacking.

While true, the ARS is already in-system :P

It's helpful to know, though; for example, I've had the planet get attacked and the ARS destroyed before I remembered to use it.  Caused me a heart attack until I figured out I could just use a normal lab.  :)

Can I leave a planet after it's hacked and still have it hacked when I capture it? I.e with the hacking vessel. Currently I'm so much under pressure I can't keep the AI responding any more.

Yes; once you hack something, it is permanently hacked.

Once the timer expires on the hacker it's done.  The AI is going to throw one last pointy stick at your face (albeit a rather large one) and the benefits are yours.  You can even delete the hacker.
