Formations?
« on: January 02, 2010, 06:42:21 pm »
Can we have formations in the expansion? Pretty please?  ;D
Even if its just something simple, such as a sort of rectangle formation with the lowest-range ships in the front in a reasonable thick line, with the higher ranged ships behind (resulting in cruisers in the very back, very nice  ;D)

I just had a moment where my fleet was randomly happening to fly in a square formation, and i started thinking about this :)
The main reason, although the above example would be great for combat tactics, would be to make it a bit easier to set up defensive (or offensive!) lines with your fleet, or simply just to have a more sensible way of forming the fleet while building / repairing etc.

Sort of like this;

--------------- Infantry (in our future-case, fighters and other low-range fast ships)
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.- Cavalry (in the future cavalry are cruisers etc! also starships packed in the middle here, for maximum support coverage)
-_-_-_-_-_-_-  Artillery (sniper ships, long range bombers, possibly cruisers here instead)

The current default sphere formation is a bit cumbersome and doesnt really help the effectiveness of your fleet :) (especially since starships are often randomly distributed among the edges, and bombers who should be protected in the center, are also randomly scattered).

Anyone agrees?  ;)

EDIT: clarification, i dont mean when ships are moving, just the final rally point each ships gets when you right click somewhere. Not any changes in how they move etc, just the end formation when they stand still.

Formations are not something that's ever likely to be implemented, both for performance reasons and that they're not in tune with the general design of the game and the 'flocking' approach taken by x4000 to not only movement but AI decision making and other areas, too.

You can read the reasoning behind this in more detail here - http://arcengames.com/forums/index.php/topic,173.0.html

A similar, but somewhat different, formation movement option may potentially be implemented - http://arcengames.com/forums/index.php/topic,317.0.html

Well, I'm not talking about when the ships are engaged in combat, or even when they are moving!
I'm just talking about their movement location, instead of being set in a circle, it could be a formation of sorts.
It wouldnt have to affect any part of their method of moving etc, just where each ship is told to go when you right click. (as when holding control and watching where they will eventually try to go)

I perfectly understand that they'd still move in their current beautiful flocking manner, especially when engaging enemies, thats a given :)
I just want some better default "standing-still" formation than the circle.
Hope you understand =)

I still doubt this'll be implemented, because it's just aesthetics, it won't actually add anything to gameplay tactics :P.

Chris is trying to make this a macro oriented game, not a micro oriented one, and having formations would add to the micro, not the macro. Sorry man :-X.

How is it not gameplay tactics (or even macro strategy for that matter) when it would impact how many ships are in firing range towards a given location?
Everyone is always so anti-my-ideas on this forum lol. I really dont see whats so pointless about this suggestion, it would make setting up a defensive line much less cumbersome (a sphere with your fighters randomly scattered about so only 10% of them are in firing range isnt a great idea).

Its not even micro, its just about changing the default right-click movement order formation lol. How is one right click any more micro than another right click?
I'll just stop posting ideas ^_^

You're not the first, and probably far from the last, to post this idea, dude :P. Unfortunately, I still doubt it'll be added in...

You can manually do this, using the bar on the right side of the screen (which is what I've been doing constantly in my current game :P).

I think that the thought process is that it's about planets as a whole, then system, then ships, then how ships are setup. Setup being last on that list it takes least priority. If you want to do it it's still feasible to do it manually, but it's too much work for something with little gain.

I'm not trying to bring you down personally, but this idea has been denied 20 times over, and isn't likely to be implemented :-X.

well really, i use hotkeys for all that.

group 1- main force, usually fleet starships
group 2- dreadnaughts.
group 3- support; whatever units i decide to bring as support. Usually my special unit, if its a useful enough support unit. I like to bring something fast here...
group 4- non-combat support; forcefield, mobile builder, science labs, colony ships
group 5- 5 engineers mk2
group 6 and up are usually too far from my hand to use properly.. I use them now and again

But really; move the ships where you want them. Given the OMGWTGHUGE range of dreadnaughts, a real formation isnt required. fleet starships have enough range to cover them... cruisers/fast support have either good range or good speed..

What I'm saying is, that formations dont matter. I can shoot straight through your lines and hit your starships in the back with mine. ...
