« on: June 20, 2010, 09:44:39 pm »
Hi All

I'll admit i'm 64..oldddddddd... ;D..Anyway so far in to the tutorial i like the game a lot.....As I get older I seem to get dumber so how difficult for someone of my advanced age(Kid's brain though)...Is it to learn?

I want to give myself a Father's day gift...I don't have a very good computer..intel 2.66 ghz 1gig of ram and an old nvidia6200 PCI...

What I really want is a game to get lost in for long play sessions and the only game that ever did that was Alpha Centauri....

I'n ready to step up so any advice will be well appreciated...Heck i even had to try tutorial 2 twice   couldn't find enemy planed what a putz..lol

anyway
thanks
Tom :)

Hey Tom , welcome to the forums !

As for the tutorial, go over that bunch of times, it took me my fourth try to actually beat the simulation tutorial. (1st was messing around with the new ships, built 10 mk3 energy reactor on 1 planet just to learn that it will decrease the efficiency, and so on.)

After you did your tutorial and finally figured out there's 2 different resources you need to get, and know that you have to destroy some random ai, you can start reading the wiki : http://www.arcengames.com/mediawiki/index.php?title=AI_War:Fleet_Command then go on do the medium level tutorial.

I suggest that you read most of it, partly for knowledge, partly for fun (great sense of humor in the articles there) and you will learn the backround of the game, and how to start a game.

After that you should be able to last about 10 hours on difficulty 7 but do not fear! I for one, never even try to win my first game and just mess with all the ship types.

Then for your pleasure, go pick a game with cheats on and ai difficulty 1, and briefly win the game .

Then go pick a game with difficulty 10 to see how you would lose (few ever win)

At last, you have the knowledge of the wiki, messed with most of the ships, experienced how to win a game and know why you would lose in a very hard game, go pick a lvl 6 or lvl 7 for a real long game, any questions ask us or look up the wiki, and you will have lots of fun.

of course, it's just a suggestion and you don't have to copy step by step (skip the lvl 10 one if you don't want your confidence pounded, mine took a beating after losing in 30 minutes)

Hey Tom,

Indeed, welcome! I'm the designer of the game, so I'm of course biased with how easy or hard it is to pick up and learn. I imagine you'll do fine, though, as this game tends to skew older in its fanbase. Most fans do seem to be in their mid to late 20s, or early thirties, but we have quite a few folks that are in their fifties or sixties who play. A number of them are also fans of the matrix games titles, and posted about this game on those forums.

I'm in my late 20s myself, but a big part of the reason I created this game was to be able to play it with my dad, my uncle, and one of my uncle's colleagues. The colleage is about my age, bt my dad is in his late fifties and my uncle is in his late forties. In a lot of the games we played in multiplayer over the years, my dad and uncle were at a disadvantage because they weren't super fast clickers on the mouse. They're both very tech savvy, very much into science and engineering, but that manifested itself in strategy games as a desire to sit, think, plan, and execute. Having it be a test of reflexes just wasn't part of the equation for them, which was a frustration with most rts titles. So, with their constant feedback and ideas throghout the design process, ai war was designed to be a title where we could play together and all be on equal footing withoUt the reflexes thing being an advantage for me and the colleague. Not to imply that my dad and uncle have bad reflexes by any stretch, just that they don't even think to exercise those reflexes during a strategy game. So, in the end ai war turned out to have more in common with chess than starcraft, which also suited my own tastes well.

Hope you enjoy it! The tutorials should give you a great feel for it, and the wiki is chock full of other articles and information if you want. Thanks for your interest!

Many thanks for your support! Be sure to check out the strategy subforum, and if you have any questions come up feel free to ask there! There's a lot of good activity in there, with lot of healthy differing viewpoints and ways of playing. Often you'll et several different reponses if it's a "what's the best way to..." kind o question, and then you can decide what matches youR own style the best. :)

Welcome to the game!

AI war is a great game focused around strategy, not the typical clicking frenzy (and microing) as most other RTS (tactical) games are, as said earlier here. So you can easily enjoy several hours long sessions with thinking and planning in AI war. You can up the speed of the game if that is desired as well.

For my first game I played against 2 level 5 AIs, I think that was easy, but the AI scales from 1 to 10, so you just gotta find your own pace and adjust the game to that.

A typical game for me last 20 to 30 hours, I just like to take it slow and think and plan a lot, but others here play it significantly faster.

We are the architects of our own existence

The most 'user-friendly' thing about this game, for people who aren't south korean starcraft players, is the fact that you can just hit "P" to pause the action and get a grip on the situation. You can queue up orders, look for that large group of ships you left somewhere, etc. Good stuff.

There are some settings options that make it even keep the music playing and the screen not darken, too.  I use that, for sure. :)

Might I share something my wonderful psychology teach taught.  There have been many old people in certain assisted living home where the staff treated them as though they were old and senile, when these same people were moved to another home where the staff was more supporting and expected more of the patients, many of the patients greatly improved even to the point that they didn't need to be in an assisted living home anymore.  Some people were even cured of Alzheimers.

(Alzheimers, can't really be cured, but it can't be fully diagnosed without dissecting the brain either.  Obviously it's impossible to accurately diagnose a living person with Alzheimers.  These people were mis-diagnosed.)

So, whatever you think about yourself will come true.  Not just a cute saying, but scientifically accurate in many cases.

AI War will keep you mentally sharp.  :)
