In an ideal world, all ship types would be useful on both defence and offence.

not really, I preffer variety of ship roles, but all the triangle ships are multipurpose to an extent (ie, pure fighter wave is countered by frigates)

What I'm saying is that it would be nice if each triangle ship had a unique role in both defence and offence. That way, triangle-ships will be the bread and butter of any fleet, meant to be supplemented by starships and extra fleetships.
Time travel in the classic sense has no place in rational theory, but temporal distortion does exist on the quantum level, and more importantly it can be controlled.

I think that's what was meant to be the balance all along, but the 4.0 changes have really changed A LOT.
It's just carriers all the way down!
