Is the AI supposed to be acting like this?
« on: September 08, 2014, 03:29:51 pm »
I've noticed an odd behavior that I found when being aided by the Dyson Sphere. Mind you, the Dyson Sphere doesn't seem to be required for this, but I doubt I would have noticed this oddity if not for such. It should be noted I'm only playing on 6/6, so that may have to do with the AI's oddity here...

Whenever an attack fleet is attacked while enroute over a neutral planet, they seem to continue moving to the wormhole, then pull back to another point and regroup there. They then wait a bit before trying to proceed onwards- and when the Dyson Sphere is constantly sending their gatlings, this means that with certain fleets, I've basically been able to take my sweet time in handling them since every gatling they encounter seems to reset them. And this has happened multiple times over the course of this playthrough, so it's not a one-off thing.

On the plus side, I've been able to exploit this behavior by popping in my spire fleet, thinning their numbers, then retreating when they get too close for comfort. Rinse and repeat and I take very small losses against thousands of ships.

I have seen the "wait at a point a little distant from a wormhole" recently. I believe it is to help prevent them from getting ambushed while sitting right on the wormhole (by warheads for example). I thought it happened only when they didn't think they could take whatever was on the other side of the wormhole and so were waiting for the situation to change.

Yeah the ships amass off to the side of the wormhole until they have a sizable advantage. This is especially noticeable when you're hacking a planet and the ships pour out of the warp gate or whatever.

Also, some ships will occasionally break off from the group and slowly inch their way towards the wormhole. They typically don't actually go through unless the entire group moves, though.

It'd probably make more sense to the player if they went straight to the "camp" point instead of touching the wormhole first.

I'd strongly support that- the behaviour at the moment is rather cheesable- particularly the way that, once an engagement on the planet is finished, all ships will head there before reforming. What ships get the last, long after the bulk of the fleet? Long range snipers, bombards, ect...
